The John Deere 5101EN narrow series tractor is the largest in the 5EN series from JD. Smaller machines in the series are the John Deere 5083EN and the John Deere 5093EN tractors. All of these tractors have been constructed so that they are narrow by design which makes them very easy to operate in constricted places like vineyards, orchards and nurseries. The JD 5101EN is the narrow model of the John Deere 5101E tractor. The engine powering this machine is a PowerTech model that has been designed and produced in house by JD. This 4 cylinder diesel engine features a liquid cooling system to prevent overheating that can hold up to 11.4 liters of water. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 17 to 1. The air intake is first filtered through a dry type air filter that prevents dust and other particle getting into the combustion process and potentially clogging the engine. The total displacement of the engine comes to 4.5 liters and it produces 101 hp.

The engine uses diesel from a tank that can hold up to 71.9 liters (19 US gallons). Power from the engine on the John Deere 5101EN gets to the wheels through a either the standard transmission that gives the tractor 12 gears going forwards and in reverse or an optional PowrReverser transmission that gives it 24 gears in both forwards and reverse. All gear changing on the JD 5101EN is done with the help of a wet clutch.

The John Deere 5101EN tractor has a wheelbase of 2.18 m (85.7 inches) on both the 2WD and MFWD versions. The JD 5101EN is quite a large tractor that weighs between 2487 kg (5483 lbs) and 2624 kg (5784 lbs) depending on whether it is the 2WD or MFWD version and whether it comes with a cab or open operator station.
