Cub Cadet LTX1042

The Cub Cadet LTX1042 lawn mower is a little bit more powerful than the Cub Cadet LTX1040 lawn mower as it has a Kohler engine that produces 20 hp in power output which is identical to the power output of the Cub Cadet LTX1045 tractor lawnmower. This engine transfers power to the wheels via a hydrostatic transmission that makes the LTX1042 an automatic. This means that no pesky gear changes are needed! You just need to press down further on the speed pedal to speed up or ease off it to slow down. The engine is key started using a 12 volt battery. Unfortunately though, the LTX 1042 does not have power steering, just manual.

The Cub Cadet LTX1042 lawn mower has a digital clock that registers how many operating hours it has. This is a fantastic tool to properly gauge when next to service it. The mower deck on the LTX 1042 has a 42 inch cutting width and has 1 wheel located approximately at each corner to prevent the deck from scraping the ground when the mower deck is particularly low. The deck on the Cub Cadet can be lowered to within 1.5 inches above the ground and raised in 0.25 inch increments so that it’s 4 inches above the ground.

The Cub Cadet LTX1042 is a new model and as such has a whole host of features that make it far safer to operate than previous models. The engine can only be started when the LTX 1042 is in neutral and if the driver leaves the seat of the mower, the engine will cut out. Like many Cub Cadet lawn mowers, there is a huge range of compatible implements that can turn the lawnmower into a multi purpose machine. There is a 42 inch snow blower that can be attached as well as rollers, carts and sprayers.

The first year wasn’t too bad. It cut my grass. Second year the deck wouldn’t lower – adjustment arm was bent because it’s flimsy low-grade crap steel from China (like the rest of this unit). Get the deck to work, then the steering goes out. Trying to adjust it is extremely difficult. I had to purchase a special jack from Harbor Freight (which itself is a POS) to get it up in the air so I could get something else under it to hold it up so I could work on it. See, the jack uses the front wheels to lift the mower so if you want to do anything with the steering you have to figure out a different way to get under there.

All in all, these things are designed to fail. They are a repair shop’s dream. I’ve easily spent more time working on this POS than I have actually using it.

I made the mistake of getting the rear bagger to go with it. Save your money. That thing doesn’t work any better than the mower itself.

    I’m getting goats. Screw this.

    Pros: It usually cuts grass
Cons: Steering is brutally difficult to adjust. Extremely poor design.

This model has given me trouble since I got it. In the last 3 years I have had to replace the FAN;HYDRO;LT 6 different times and the broken deck belt 5 times. in addition the deck belt jumps off of the idler pulley monthly. This will be the last Club Cadet I ever own and highly discourage anyone from buying this machine.

Overall experience is excellent except for the inability to reach the advertised height of 4 inches. The comment from distributor Bluegrass Lawn & Garden has prevented me from returning to them, nice peiple but poor handling of my issue.

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: Bought LTX 1042KN 3/13. Replaced belts 3/18 plus bearings(new ones have a cover to protect against against moisture in bearings after deck cleaning). Maintained and serviced each year, always starts and performs as expected. Have no issue with bagging system. Mulches great.
Cons: “Researched before purchase and was advertised as 1.5 to 4 inches mowing range. Measured the height of the blade on pavement and only could get 31/2. Called Cadet dealer from which I purchased and the reply was “31/2 is all you get, if you want 4 inches buy a commercial mower”. At time my lawn needed some work, and, now that my grass is thick and luscious, I really need the 4 inches. This is my only complaint and it is major to me. I look forward to some followup from the award winning service dept at Cub Cadet!!

Bagger attachemnent fell off every pass on my first out and broke one of the pins holding it on.
After reading reviews I am a little scared about this expensive purchase. My last Sears tractor did not have a problem in twenty years and it was stored outside.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: auto transmission is smooth. Very powerful.
Cons: Lights on all the time is silly.
seat not very adjustable for tall people
attachements for baggger and mulcher are poor fitting and appear cheap and poorly designed.
Wheel on the front of the deck gets locked when you use the bagger.
Attachments: bagger and mulcher. Not thought out well.

  5. J. L. Flaherty says:

I’m comparing it to my Honda two cylinder liquid cooled tractor, the Cub just don’t cut it.

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
    Pros: Cuts Grass
Cons: Way too noisey, hearing protection a must. Lights on all the time not a good idea, should be an on-off switch, who needs lights when most people will be cutting in day light.

poor cutting on turns, leaves an uncut strip in center of turn.

Attachments: Grass Bagger-Undersized and bags are flimsey
    Modifications: None
