In many ways, the Troy Bilt Thoroughbred lawn tractor is very similar to the Troy Bilt Horse XP as they both have the same sized mower deck and engines with the same power output. However, neither is as powerful as the Troy Bilt Big Red garden tractor lawn mower. The Thoroughbred mower uses a Kohler Courage engine which provides it with 22 hp. The engine is key started and is fed with gas from a tank that has a maximum capacity to hold up to 9.5 liters (2.5 US gallons). The engine transfers power to the wheels of the Thoroughbred through a hydrostatic transmission that is controlled with a foot pedal.

The 22 hp powers the mower deck on the Troy Bilt Thoroughbred. This mower deck has a cutting width of 46 inches, although due to the discharge flap located on the side of the mower it’s total width is about 10 inches greater than this. The mower deck has on it, 4 small anti-scalping wheels to make sure that the mower deck does not ‘catch’ on the lawn as you are cutting it. The mower deck has 6 different cutting heights that it operates at so that you should always be able to find a suitable height.

For dealing with the grass clippings on the Troy Bilt Thoroughbred, you can optionally attach a rear bagger to collect them. This is the best option if you want to leave you lawn looking really neat. However there are also other options that you can use like a FastAttach mulching kit which will turn the clippings into a fast rotting mulch. Or a alternatively if you are stuck for time, you can just discharge the grass clippings out the side of the mower deck. The total weight of the Thoroughbred lawn mower comes to 292.6 kg (645 lbs).
