The Toro GT420 is a mid sized model in the GT 400 range. Unlike the Toro GT410 garden tractor lawn mower, it’s powered by a Kawasaki engine. This engine has a total displacement of 0.585 liters and has over head valves. The paper air filter on the engine prevents small dust particles from getting into the combustion chambers where they can potentially clog them and damage the engine. The engine is a twin cylinder model that is started using a 12 volt battery and keystart ignition system. Thankfully the GT 420 uses a hydrostatic transmission which means that it’s an automatic with infinite speeds both in forwards and reverse.

The fuel capacity of the gas tank on the Toro GT420 is 15.1 liters (4 US gallons). This is enough for many hours of continuous operation without the need for refueling. This large fuel tank is a strong indicator that the GT 410 lawn tractor is often used by commercial contractors and landscapers. The total weight of the lawnmower comes in at 298 kg (657 lbs) which may seem fairly heavy. The rear wheels which drive the lawnmower each measure 23×10.5 (23 inch diameter, 10.5 inch width). The front wheels each measure 16×6.5 (16 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width).

The mower decks that are available for the Toro GT420 lawn mower are a 42″ rear discharging mowing deck, a 42 inch side discharging mower deck, a 48 inch side discharging mower deck and a 52 inch side discharging mower deck. There is also a 48 inch Recycler mowing deck which can be used. The Recycler deck mulches the grass.
