The McCulloch M11597 garden tractor lawnmower is very similar in lots of ways to the McCulloch M11577, the McCulloch M11577RB and the McCulloch M11577HRB tractor lawnmowers. The main reason for this is that that they all use the same engine which provides the tractor with 11.5 hp. This is a Briggs and Stratton PowerBuilt engine that has just one cylinder and uses a dry type air filter to purify the air intake of particulate matter and dust before it enters into the combustion chamber. The engine transfers power to the wheels of the M115 97 by using a gearshift transmission that gives the lawnmower 5 speeds traveling forwards and 1 for reversing.

The McCulloch M11597 has a large 0.97 m (38 inch mower deck). This discharges the grass clippings out the side of the mower deck. Optionally you can also purchase a mulching plug for it to thoroughly chop up the grass clippings so that rather than lying on your lawn for ages, they will quickly rot back into the ground, returning their nutrients to the soil. The mower deck can be raised and lowered using a spring assisted lever. It operates as low as 1.5 inches above the ground and as high as 4 inches. There are 6 different operating heights in total for the mowing deck.

When buying the McCulloch M11597 brand new, it comes with a standard type seat. It does not have a particularly high back, which means that you may find your back quickly getting tired after just a few hours of operation. The fuel tank on this model is also quite small, only holding 4.7 liters (1.2 US gallons) of gasoline. Both of these factors would seem to indicate that the M11597 is primarily intended for use by individuals as opposed to garden contractors. The total weight of the machine comes to 180 kg (396.8 lbs).
