Massey Ferguson 399
The Massey Ferguson 399 is the most powerful model in the 300 series produced by MF. It was an immensely popular model as it production run lasted a full 11 years, from 1986 right up until 1997. There is also a smaller model of it available, the Massey Ferguson 398. The MF399 is powered by a Perkins built A6.354 diesel engine. This 6 cylinder, natural aspiration engine has a displacement of 5.8 liters and produces 97 hp. This Perkins engine is cooled via a liquid cooling system that requires 20.1 liters of coolant. The air intake is filtered through a dual dry element air filter to ensure that there is no residue (dust, etc.). There is another choice of engine also for the Massey Ferguson 399. This is a Perkins 1006-6HR diesel powered engine. It’s a 6 cylinder, 6 liter engine that produces slightly more power at 104 hp. The engine is fitted into a choice of either a 4×2 2WD chassis or a 4×4 MFWD 4WD chassis.
Like many Massey Ferguson tractors, the MF 399 has a choice of transmissions (3 in fact). The first is a speed shift transmission that gives the Massey Ferguson 399 18 speeds going forward and 6 in reverse (this transmission choice was only available after 1995, late in it’s production run). Another choice of transmission is a synchromesh transmission that gives the tractor 12 speeds going forward and 4 in reverse. The last transmission available is a shuttle transmission that gives the tractor 12 gears going forward and 12 in reverse. The top speed of the 399 is 18.2 mph.
The Tractor comes with a 2 post roll bar (ROPS) as standard, but when you were purchasing one new, you also had the option of getting it with a HiLine cab to shield you from the elements. The fuel capacity of the Massey Ferguson 399 is 126 liters (33.3 US gallons) of diesel. It can take a number of implements on the back of it which can be connected via a category 2, 3 point hitch. The tractor has a length of 4.15 m (163.4 inches) for the 2WD version but is slightly bigger if it’s the 4WD version with a length of 4.29 m (169.1 inches). It’s width remains the same whether it’s a 2WD or a 4WD model at 2.21 m (87.2 inches). The minimum turning radius on the Massey Ferguson 399 is 9.4 m (31 feet).
