Massey Ferguson 290

The Massey Ferguson 290 is the tractor that took over from the Massey Ferguson 275 in 1983. It is the larger model of the Massey Ferguson 270, while it also has a bigger brother, the Massey Ferguson 298. It was manufactured for 3 years until 1986. The MF 290 is powered by a 4 cylinder Perkins AD4.248 diesel engine with natural aspiration. This engine has a displacement of 4.1 liters and is liquid cooled. It can be preheated in cold conditions using an optional block heater or ether. The air intake uses a dual dry element air filter to make sure that the air is clear of any dust particles and other residues before entering the combustion chambers. The Perkins AD4.248 produces a maximum of 66 hp. The engine is started via a 12 volt battery that is charged with a choice of alternator, either a 32 amp one or a 45 amp one. The engine within the 290 sits on a choice of 2 chassis, either a 4×2 2WD one or a 4×4 MFWD 4WD chassis.

The fuel tank on the Massey Ferguson 290 holds up to 79.5 liters (21 US gallons) of diesel. The hydraulics on the MF 290 are open and require 41.6 liters of hydraulic fluid to fully fill it. The hydraulic system operates under a maximum pressure of 3000psi. It uses a category 2, 3 point hitch at the rear for attachments. You’ll be pleased to know that the tractor uses power steering so that you are very unlikely to lose control of the machine during operation.

The weight and size of the Massey Ferguson 290 varies depending on whether it’s constructed using the 2WD or 4WD chassis. The 4WD chassis gives the tractor a total weight of 2990 kg (6592 lbs) when shipping. It has a wheelbase of 2.29 m (90.2 inches), a length of 3.88 m (153.1 inches) and a width of 2.15 m (85 inches). The 2WD chassis gives the Massey Ferguson 290 a lower shipping weight of 2500 kg (5512 lbs) and a much smaller wheelbase of 2.13 m (84 inches). The 2WD’s length comes in at a marginally smaller 3.83 m (150.8 inches) while it is just as wide as it’s 4WD twin at 2.15 m (85 inches).
