John Deere X520
The John Deere X520 garden tractor is from the latest range of JD lawnmowers, the X500 range. The machine itself is powered by a 26 horsepower, V twin engine that’s liquid cooled. It incorporates the JD’s trademark iTorque system which makes the machine far more efficient and capable of using it’s power more effectively. The JD X520 is a larger version of the John Deere X500 lawnmower but it’s obviously not quite as big and powerful as the likes of the John Deere X530 or John Deere X534.
The John Deere X520 draws fuel from a 18.9 liter (5 US gallons) fuel tank which holds enough fuel to allow for very long continuous operation before it needs to be refilled. Unlike a lot of older models of lawn mower from John Deere, the JD X520 doesn’t use a manual transmission. Instead it uses an automatic transmission and is controlled by 2 pedals that utilize Twin Touch technology so that little effort is required to change between forward and reverse as well as changing it’s speed. While it is a fairly large sized lawn mower, it actually has quite a small turning radius of just 0.56 m (22 inches) so you will find it useful on both big and small lawns.
The JD X520 comes with a 54 inch cutting deck as standard which allows you to cut grass on 3 different modes;cutting and mulching, cutting and collection or cutting and side discharge. This deck can be leveled up and down over very small increments of just 0.25 inches, meaning that you will always get the cut that you want with this machine. But the John Deere X520 is not just a garden tractor for cutting the lawn. It also comes with John Deere’s CargO Mount system which allows it to work with a range of attachments like front end loaders, front blades, mid mounted blades, snow blowers, hoppers and aerators. All in all, this is truly a quality machine. For more information on this model, you can check it out on the official JD site by clicking here.

I mow 4 acres with my x520, 54” deck. It is water cooled with locking differential and lugs on the tires, climbs hills very well even when grass is wet. I sometimes have to cut regardless of the weather. I have compared a Zero turn mower which is faster on the flat but this works hills so much better. No power steering or hydraulic deck left which has yet to be a problem. I use a steering wheel ball allowing effortless one hand steering.
I currently have 200 hours with no mechanical problems. Deck is removed easy enough but requires some patience. About a 15 min job to get it back on as the linkage requires some pin alignment but no tools are needed. The large deck mows even and does well around trees once you develop a two pass technique.
