John Deere LA105
Still in current production (as of 2010), the John Deere LA105 is a large lawnmower from JD. It’s gasoline Briggs and Stratton motor is a 1 cylinder, 0.5 liter pumps out a very respectable 19.5 hp. The engine is air cooled and the air filter uses a combination of paper and foam. This power gets to the 4×2 2WD chassis via a Dana 4360 transmission which gives the JD LA 105 1 gear when reversing, but 5 gear when moving forward. The top speed of the John Deere LA 105 is 5 mph when going forward. It understandably much slower in reverse.
The wheelbase on the LA105 is 1.24 m (50 inches) but depending on the size of the mowing deck, the overall width of the machine can increase. It has a turning radius of 0.5 m (18 inches). This garden tractor lawnmower weighs 200 kg (442 lbs).
The John Deere LA105 uses John Deere’s trademarked CargO Mount system which allows for a large rear bagger to be quickly attached as well as a whole range of other useful John Deere implements and attachments to make this modern sit on lawn mower a full functional and useful machine to have in any medium to large sized garden. Also included on this model are powerful and durable headlights, so that even if you need to keep on working through dusk and darkness, you will still be able to properly navigate and see where you are going. The standard bagger that can be used with the John Deere LA105 has a 8 bushel capacity. But it also has a whole range of other optional attachments. You can use John Deere lawn sweepers, front blades, tractor shovels, mid-mount blades, carts, snow blowers, snow throwers, rotary brooms, sprayers, aerators and rollers with this garden tractor lawnmower

Good !
Wife is happy with it as she did not want a hyro-trans.
I’ve enjoyed owning and running this mower so far. I replace a 28 year old JD 111 with the LA105 and am very impressed. While it’s not a real JD just a branded mower for mostly the big box stores (same as the Sabre JD used to sell in their dealerships) it’s a good mower for smaller yards under 1 acre. If you need more I would probably get one of the X300 models. I haven’t had any issues with it so far and the only maintenance I’ve done is changing the oil/oil filter every spring, air filter, and cleaning leaves/grass off the top of the deck.
It does what it was designed to do and does it well. It’s a couple hundred bucks more than a comparable Craftsman mower but slightly better built and you get better availability for parts and service from any JD dealership.
Does a very nice even job mowing grass. Still very nice after it’s 3rd season.
Has a replaceable spin-on oil filter.
Great price, paid 1500$ from HD.
Excellent warranty 2 years.
Easy steeing, 1 handed.
Good fuel usage. Lot’s of HP for tall stuff.
Quiet and smooth enginge. Quiet deck.
Has an hour meter w/basic maintenance reminders.
A lot of these mowers have been sold so parts should be available for a long time.
Not really a con but I wish it would go a bit faster in the highest gear. If you want to drive it to another location top speed is 5.5mph.
I like it. I hear a lot of people questioning why John Deere would build a model for sale in big box stores, and why I would buy one. Well, the price was excellent, it’s a better machine than other makes in the same price range, it’s the right size for getting into smaller spaces, it’s relatively maneuverable, and it has a cup holder.
After eighty hours of use, much of it harder than the LA105 was really designed for, I’ve never had to add oil except at scheduled changes. The only repair I’ve needed was after I mowed a piece of steel.
Dealer support (it may a big box model, but I bought it at a John Deere dealer) has been excellent.
What I’d really like to see is a JD machine with a front end loader, rear PTO, and hydraulic sleeve hitch, all in a package that would fit through a 36″ gate. It wouldn’t even have to mow grass.
