John Deere L
The John Deere L is one of JD’s first tractors. It is part of the same letter series of machines that also includes the likes of the John Deere M and the John Deere H tractors. This tractor had a very long production run that lasted 10 years from 1937 until production finished in 1946. During this time, all construction of the tractor took place in the Moline plant which is located in Illinois. In total the JD L originally came with one of 3 different engine choices. One choice is a Hercules NXB gasoline engine which is a 2 cylinder with a total displacement of 1.1 liters. Another choice is a John Deere gasoline engine that is also a 2 cylinder with a total volume of 1.1 liters. The last choice is a Hercules NXA 2 cylinder engine which is gasoline powered and has a total displacement of 0.9 liters. All three engine choices are liquid cooled. The max power output from these engines is 10.4 hp.
The gearbox on the John Deere L is very simplified. It’s just an unsynchronized transmission that has 3 speeds traveling forwards and only one for reversing. The top speed of the JD L is 9.7 kph (6 mph). The total weight of the tractor comes to 687 kg (1515 lbs). The tires are fairly small. The front wheels each measure 4-15 (4 inch width, 15 inch rim diameter), while the rear wheels each measure 6-22 (6 inch width, 22 inch rim diameter).
As you can probably guess, the John Deere L is a fairly small machine. It measures 2.31 m (91 inches) long and is 1.24 (49 inches) wide at it’s widest point. The fuel tank on the JD L can hold up to a maximum of 22.7 (6 US gallons) of gasoline. There is also another model L. This is the John Deere LI industrial tractor which has been specifically modified to be used on building sites, etc.
