The John Deere 9630 tractor is not like your average machine from John Deere. This is a colossus! It makes practically every other tractor made by John Deere look like a wimp. Lets start off with the engine…It’s a John Deere manufactured 543 hp diesel engine. That’s right five hundred and forty three horsepower! The engine uses a variable geometry turbocharger for extra power. The displacement of this engine is a very large 13.5 liters. As you can imagine, an engine this size burns a huge amount of fuel, so it’s a good thing that the fuel tank can hold 1325 liters (350 US gallons) of diesel. This model started production in 2007 and is manufactured in JD’s Waterloo plant in Iowa.

The whole tractor is built on a 4×4 articulated 4WD chassis to give it both control and maneuverability. The John Deere 9630 uses a choice of 2 transmissions. The first is a PowrShift transmission box that gives the tractor 18 gears going forward and 6 when it’s reversing. The other transmission is a PowrSync gear box that gives the JD 9630 24 speeds going forward and 6 when reversing. The hydraulics system that you’ll find on the JD 9630 is a flow and pressure compensating closed system that as you can imagine needs a huge amount of hydraulic fluid to be fully operational.

The wheelbase of the tractor measures in at 3.5 m (137.5 inches) which means that it’s minimum turning radius is actually quite high at 4.45 m (14.6 feet). The weight of the tractor when it has no ballast attached comes in at 16,914 kg (37,290 lbs). When it then has dual wheels attached, but no ballast, this weight increases to 17,980 kg (39,640 lbs). As this tractor is so large and obviously very expensive, many of the figures and statistics mentioned above can vary for the simple fact that when you are ordering this tractor new, you are given a lot of customization options, from the engine to the controls to the hitch and more.
