John Deere 950
The John Deere 950 enjoyed a very long production run of 11 years berween 1978 and 1989. It was part of a series of tractors that included the John Deere 1050. It is a compact tractor powered by a 3 cylinder, 1.7 liter, Yanmar, natural aspiration diesel engine that gives it 27 hp. This power is transmitted into a top speed of 12.1 mph through 8 forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds. The engine is prevented from overheating with a liquid cooling system that requires 6.2 liters of coolant to fill it.
It’s hydraulic system was upgraded in 1984. It originally required 18 liters (4.75 US gallons) of hydraulic fluid but after it’s upgrade, newer models needed a little more at 19.9 liters (5.25 US gallons). Meanwhile it has a fuel tank that can hold 32.2 liters of diesel. There was a choice of chassis on the John Deere 950. You could either get one with 4×2 2WD or a 4×4 MFWD 4WD chassis. The JD 950 shipping weight was 1360 kg (3,000 lbs) but once fully operational, it’s weight actually decreased to 1224 kg (2700 lbs). You can also add ballast to the 950 to make sure it didn’t tip when the front end loader is attached. This ballast brought the weight of the tractor up to 1639 kg (3615 lbs).
The John Deere 950 is quite a well liked and used compact tractor (why else would it have had such a long production run?) as it has a great range of options when it comes to attachments. It’s naturally fitting front end loader is the John Deere 80 which has a bucket width of 1.34 m (53 inches) while the breakout force for the bucket is 934 kg (2,060 lbs). The reach of the bucket is 1.35 m (53.2 inches) at ground level. It also has a backhoe attachment, the John Deere 8A, which weighs in at 430 kg (930 lbs) and has a bucket force of 1451 kg (3,200 lbs). This versatile compact tractor remains a firm favorite among commercial operators as well as small farmers due in a large part to these 2 very good attachments.
