John Deere 8640
The John Deere 8640 pulling tractor is a very large machine from the Iron Horse series of tractors. This machine has a very large engine that produces a massive 275 hp. This is a diesel engine that JD designed and built in house. The engine is a 6 cylinder that is liquid cooled using a system that holds up to 45.4 liters of water. The JD engine fires at a compression ratio of 15.2:1. The engine uses a dual paper element air filter for the air intake to prevent dust and other small particles from getting into the combustion chambers which can impact the engine’s performance. The displacement of this turbocharged engine is 10.1 liters. It is started with twin 12 volt batteries.
The engine powers the wheels of the John Deere 8640 by passing power from the engine through a John Deere Quad-Range gearbox. This gearbox gives the operator 16 forward gears and 6 for reversing. The driver changes gears using a hydraulic wet disc clutch. The top speed of the tractor going forward is 32.5 kph (20.2 mph) while in reverse, it’s max speed is 21.7 kph (13.5 kph). The JD 8640 is specifically built as a pulling tractor on an articulated 4X4 4WD chassis. It uses very reliable hydraulic wet disc brakes for slowing down.
The rear hitch (category 3/3N) on the John Deere 8640 is massively powerful. It has a rear lifting capacity of 3876 kg (8545 lbs). This hitch is powered by the closed hydraulics system that has a capacity of 136.3 liters (36 US gallons). The hydraulic system has a valve flow rate of 124.9 liters per minute (33 US gallons per minute). If you like the JD 8640 tractor, but need something a little smaller, then you should check out the John Deere 8440. The 8640 was superseded by the John Deere 8650 tractor.
