John Deere 8630
The John Deere 8630 tractor is a larger, more powerful model than it’s smaller brother, the John Deere 8430. This tractor is specifically designed for pulling very large loads. The engine that powers it is a 6 cylinder diesel built by JD. The engine has a liquid cooling system that needs a massive 41.6 liters of water to fully fill it. The engine on the JD 8630 uses a dry type air filter to keep the dust and particulate matter from entering the engine with the air intake. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 15.4-to-1. The total power output from this engine is massive at 275 hp (this is especially high considering that the tractor has not been produced since 1978!).
The John Deere 8630 uses a Quad-Range transmission to transfer this enormous power from the engine to the wheels. The Quad Range is a partial power shift gearbox that gives the JD 8630 16 speeds going forwards and 4 for reversing. The top speed of the tractor is 32.7 kph (20.3 mph) going forwards and in reverse it can hit up to 17.9 kph (11.1 mph). Unlike a lot of tractors, the JD 8630 is built on neither a 4X4 MFWD 4WD nor a 4X2 2WD chassis. Instead it’s built on an articulated 4X4 4WD chassis and uses hydraulic wet disc brakes for controlling it’s speed.
The wheels on the John Deere 8630 are simply massive. Both the front and rear wheels are the same size, each measuring 18.4-34 (18.4 inch width, 34 inch rim diameter). You will regularly see this tractor with dual wheels attached. With such a large engine and such large wheels, you’d be absolutely correct in assuming that this tractor weighs a lot. It’s operating weight comes to 11,113 kg (24,500 lbs), but it’s maximum safe ballasted weight is 12,011 kg (26,480 lbs).
