John Deere 820
The John Deere 820 was built for 5 years in John Deere’s German plant in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg from 1968 until 1973. This is not a particularly powerful tractor with a power output of 32 hp. The JD 820 is powered by a 3 cylinder diesel engine with natural aspiration. The 3 combustion chambers give the engine a size of 2.5 liters. The engine use a liquid cooling system to prevent overheating. The maximum amount of oil that the oil pan can take is 6.2 liters.
There is a choice of 2 gear systems for the John Deere 820 if you were buying it fresh off the production line. The first is a collar shift transmission that gives the engine 8 gears when traveling forwards and 4 gears for when it’s traveling backwards. The other choice is a sliding gear transmission. This gives the tractor 7 gears going forward and only one in reverse. As the engine is not particularly powerful the JD 820 is built on a 4×2 2WD chassis. The fuel tank is capable of holding 62.5 liters (16.5 US gallons) of diesel. The hydraulics system on the tractor which controls everything from the frond end loader to the rear hitch is an open hydraulics system that needs 30 liters (7.9 US gallons) of hydraulic fluid to fill it.
The tractor weighs in at 1814 kg (4000 lbs). It has a height of almost 2 meters, at 1.99 m (78.7 inches) while it is 2.05 m (81.1 inches) wide at it’s widest point. The John Deere 820 is 3.42 m (135 inches) long and has a wheelbase of 1.88 m (74.4 inches). This tractor is definitely well known among classic and antique collectors. If you see one being used by a farmer today, you may find that a makeshift roll bar (ROPS) has been added to help enhance driver safety. This may take away from the ‘collector’ value of the tractor.
