John Deere 4840
The John Deere 4840 tractor is the largest in the series that also includes the smaller John Deere 4040, the John Deere 4240 and the John Deere 4440 tractors. The engine that powers the wheels and hydraulic system on the JD 4840 is a John Deere designed and built diesel motor. The engine has a total displacement of 7.6 liters, spread over 6 cylinders. The engine is kept cool with a very large cooling system that can hold up to 37.9 liters of water. A dual paper air filter is used to keep dust and other particulate matter out of the engine. The engine uses an intercooled turbocharger to produce up to a maximum of 181 hp.
Power from the engine gets to the wheels of the John Deere 4840 through a PowerShift transmission from JD. This gearbox gives the tractor 8 speeds going forwards and 4 for reversing. It’s top speed going forward is 29.9 kph (18.6 mph), while in reverse it’s top speed is 10.3 kph (6.4 mph). The total weight of the JD 4840 comes to 8164 kg (18,000 lbs) when operational, while it has a maximum safe ballasted weight of 9239 kg (20,370 lbs). The total length of the tractor comes to 4.49 m (177 inches). The rear hitch on the John Deere 4840 is a category 3 that has a maximum safe lifting capacity of 3762 kg (8295 lbs).
