The John Deere 4600 compact utility tractor is part of the large JD 4000 series that was produced in the late nineties and early part of this century. The engine that powers it is a Yanmar 4TNE84. This is a diesel engine that uses direct injection which makes starting it that much easier. It’s a 4 cylinder engine that is keystarted with a 12 volt battery. This battery provides the engine with 650 cold cranking amps. When the engine is running, the battery gets recharged via a 40 amp alternator. The engine on the JD 4600 is liquid cooled and uses a dry type air filter to stop dust and other small particulate matter from getting into the combustion chambers. The Yanmar engine is rated at 2600 rpm. The power output comes to 43 hp.

In total there are 4 different gearboxes that you could have selected for the John Deere 4600 when you were buying it brand new. The easiest choice is the 3 range (Hi, Medium, Lo)  hydrostatic transmission that gives the compact utility tractor a top speed of 27.8 kph (17.3 mph). However if you want control over the gears you could select the PowrReverser Creeper transmission that gives the JD 4600 24 forward and reversing gears. If that’s too many gears for you, you could alternatively choose the regular PowrReverser transmission that gives the tractor 12 forwards and reversing gears using a partially synchronized power shuffle. The last choice is a collar shift gearbox that uses a dry clutch and gives you 9 speeds going forwards and 3 for reversing.

The total weight of the John Deere 4600 comes to 1564 kg (3450 lbs), while it measures 3.42 m (135 inches) long. The standard JD 4600 model comes with a 4X2 2WD chassis, but you have the option of getting it with a 4X4 MFWD 4WD chassis. The speed of this tractor is controlled using wet disc brakes.
