John Deere 2020
The John Deere 2020 is a midsized farm tractor produced by John Deere from 1965 – 1971. The previous model that was built by JD is the John Deere 2010. These tractors were constructed and produced in a range of locations; from Mexico to Dubuque in Iowa to Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Interestingly the 2020 was part of the ‘New Generation’ line of tractors that they were building at the time, although nearly forty years after the last one rolled of the production line, they don’t exactly seem like new even if they still operate to an extremely high level!
The JD 2020 has a choice of 2 John Deere built and designed engines to power it. The first is a 4 cylinder, 3 liter, John Deere gasoline engine with natural aspiration providing 54 hp while the other is a 4 cylinder, 3.3 liter diesel engine providing 54 hp also. At the time when the John Deere 2020 was rolling off the production line, the tractor did not come with a roll bar as standard. However as time went on, many people manually added their own rollbars themselves. Some even went as far as to add a full cab, to protect themselves from the elements in colder regions.
The generous fuel tank on the JD 2020 is capable of holding 73.8 liters (19.5 US gallons) of fuel, while the it required 37.9 liters (10 US gallons) for it’s hydraulic system. Using it’s synchronized, collar shift, the John Deere 2020 has 8 forward gears while only 4 in reverse which allow it to attain a maximum speed of just over 16 miles per hour. Many people are extremely fond of this tractor and it’s actually still in use today thanks to the option of a front end loader that makes most medium sized tasks very easy indeed. Luckily, like many popular John Deere models from yester-year, the JD 2020 doesn’t suffer from many mechanical problems at all and is still frequently used on farms, not just kept as an antique tractor.

I have a tendency to do things with it that only a big tractor should do.
I’ve owned this old boy since 1986 and am the second owner. He has worked well for me over the years originally pulling offset discs and mower, but now powers an irigation pump and cattle spray unit and occationally carries a fertilizer spreader. John is an old favourite and receives regular routine maintenance, but is incredibaly reliable for such an old unit
I bought my 2020 4 years ago for the purpose of clearing 7.5 acres from trees and high brush. The abuse which I subjected that poor tractor to was unconscionable when you consider what she had to endure and the conditions under which I put her. My newfound respect for her is well earnedand I can’t speak enough for her ability. She has earned a spot in my heart and in my barn.
