John Deere 1040

The John Deere 1040 compact tractor is not a particularly well known machine. It first entered production in the mid seventies in Germany. As a result of being built in Germany, it was marketed pretty much exclusively to the European market. The tractor is fairly small, with a 2.9 liter engine. This is a 3 cylinder powered by diesel. The engine is prevented from overheating thanks to a liquid cooling system. It’s rated at 2500 rpms. The operator controls the speed of the JD 1040 tractor using a collar shift gearbox. This collar shift transmission system gives the operator a total of 8 speeds going forwards and 4 for when it’s traveling in reverse.

When someone bought a brand new John Deere 1040, it came with either an open operator station with a roll bar (ROPS) or instead it had a cab. Often people attached their own, improvised cab or sun shade after purchase, so make sure to check if the cab is a genuine JD one or not before buying a second hand tractor and factor that in when you are making your purchase decision. The total weight of the JD 1040 comes to 2404 kg (5300 lbs), which means that it doesn’t need massive tires to prevent it from sinking into the ground. The wheelbase for the tractor measure 2.04 m (80.7 inches).

While the John Deere 1040 compact tractor is one of those machines that is not nearly as well known as some of the more popular models, it is still quite well known among farmers in Europe. So if you do own one, or have ever previously owned one, then you can greatly help out the Tractor Review community by leaving a review of your experiences with the JD 1040 below. Make sure to be as detailed as possible in your review to give potential purchasers an accurate picture as to whether or not they should consider buying one.

    Year of Manufacture: 1982
Pros: great tractor to drive and own. real rated HP. I have had two 1040 both great tracors, used in orcdards.
Cons: have a weakness in the hydr steering colum, so what for hydr oil leakage around the bottom of the steering wheel. Also ensure you have the correct mix of anti freze, and keep the side vents clear of dust, they can over heat when working hard on a hot day. Hope this helps.
    Attachments: sprayers, mowers, mulchers, spreders
