Husqvarna iZ5223

The Husqvarna iZ5223 zero turn lawnmower is a fairly powerful machine that’s similar in cutting size to both the Husqvarna MZ5225T and the Husqvarna P-ZT5224 zero turn lawn mowers, but not quite as powerful. The engine that powers the iZ 5223 is a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard model. This is a 2 cylinder engine that supplies the wheels and blades with 23 hp. Power from the engine gets transferred to the mower deck through a belt drive system that is engaged through an electric PTO. The mower deck itself has a cutting width of 52 inches.  It’s total width is actually as high as 66 inches when the plastic protective flap is down.

There are 3 blades housed inside the mower deck of the Husqvarna iZ5223. There is also 6 anti scalping wheels attached to the leading and trailing edges of the mower deck. These help to prevent the deck from scratching or cutting into the lawn while you are traveling over it. The mower deck on the iZ 5223 can cut grass as low as 1.5 inches from the ground and as high as 5 inches above the ground. For dealing with the grass clippings, you have 3 options. The first is to use an optional mulching plug. The second is to just discharge them out the side of the deck and leave them lying on the lawn. The last option is to collect them in a rear bagger attachment which will leave you lawn looking incredibly neat and tidy.

The Husqvarna iZ5223 is quite fast with a top speed of 15.3 kph (9.5 mph). The operator of the iZ5223 sits in a full suspension seat during operation. This seat has a high back and offers enough support so that you can continue using it for many hours without needing a rest. The total weight of the zero turn lawn mower comes to 399.2 kg (880 lbs).

One Review of the “Husqvarna iZ5223”

  1. In 2008 here in Australia this commercial grade machine would cost you $10000.00 Australian Dollars,(AUD).

My machine came to me second hand with a blown, 23 HP Kawasaki engine. From a Trailer Park & I can hear the laughter. From across the Pacific ocean already, (lol) where I worked as grounds keeper at the time.

Now there is No Way, at the time I could afford a Ten Grand, Commercial Mower. However the Boss wanted space in his Workshop floor. So he said Steve, it’s yours if you want it. But it has to be out of the building Today!.

So at end of shift I went home, got the 60HP tractor with Rear Fork Tyne’s attached and a pallet. Collected the machine.
Paid the Boss, 80 dollars for the Zero Turn.

Obtained signed receipt of sale, With the words, Sold as Scrap.

Took mower straight to our local. Small Engine repair shop.
Quote for a new Kawasaki 23HP V Twin engine, fitted was 2400.00 Dollars, AUD in 2013.
This got the machine safely, yet only just operational. My machine had endured a hard life with not much, TLC.

I could now at least use it on the Two acres of Lawn.
I have to maintain. I was able to find & spend a further 300.00 dollars on repair parts, during 2013.

Budgeted a further Six hundred dollars, each year. For the next two years. Repairs being conducted over the winter/dry seasons.

Replaced, all three cutter bearings, New front wheel bearings, Rims & Tyre’s. Replaced the rear tyres with
New type with Eight Ply side wall rating. To increase thorn & puncture resistance. Most parts I could fit myself. Replaced all the grease zerks/nipples.

The beauty of the Husqvarna IZ5223 is that.

It is a machine that is made to be worked hard.
    By a commercial owner operator.

Yet is also made to be durable, rebuilt & repaired as required. To use a Mining, Earth Moving machinery term. I would say it nearly meets the criteria.

    For the Severe Service, classification
    Worthy praise indeed.
However, that has been my experience since 2013.
    On this particular machine.

Our local repair shop owner, is a fairly honest straight shooter, type of Bloke/Guy.

He told me that Steve when you brought that machine in. I was going to tell you Don’t waste your time.

However over the next two years as his shop conducted the further, badly needed repairs. He changed his mind & was not shy about telling me so.

I did look over the replacement Husqvarna’s in his new range of Zero Turns. There was No 52 inch cut available. Only a 54 Inch Model and it was well out of my price range.

However, I did give due & serious consideration to the 48 inch cut Model. But that would cost me $6000.00 dollars AUD and the deck was too light a steel plate to take a weld if required. In my personal opinion.

    About, three years later.
    As he was driving by.
My old boss from the Trailer Park.

(He is a good man & quite a smart businessman too.)

Stopped by one day for a quick chat.

He had often seem me using the old.
Yet now rebuilt & renewed Husqvarna.
    On his way into town.
To mow our large, vacant house block.

I stopped the machine as I was mowing at the time.
During the discussion, Old Boss stated.
“I should have never given you that mower”.

The one that replaced it has not lasted Two years.
We have just purchased another, Zero Turn.
Fortunately for him, this time it was a Husqvarna.

    I replied to old boss.
Glenn, you did not give it to me?
You sold it to me as scrap, remember?

    He replied,
Yes, now that I think about it, I did.

We finished up talking about the weather and I was informed he was selling the park to retire.
I wished him well in his new life and we still parted as friends.

It is now Eight of January 2025.

I now have to finish this review up.
Depart to my garden shed and change the oil & grease the Husqvarna IZ5223 Zero Turn.

Ready to face another, Wet Season of rapid & vigorous grass & lawn growth.

I still cannot afford a Ten thousand dollar.
Commercial Grade, Zero Turn Mower with a 52 Inch cut.

Yet to this day, I have one.

    Oh I almost forgot

The Commercial Grade, Husky’s come with a Three Stage
    Industrial air cleaner assembly.

Next to oil changes and greasing.
Maintaining a good constant flow of good, dust free & clean air to your engine is essential to prolonging your engines life.

Regardless of engine size or make.
    “Please” do remember.

If your Gas or Petrol engine cannot get enough clean air.

It will just take extra Gas or Fuel instead.

This may result in Blue or Black exhaust smoke as a telltale sign & symptom.

Americans are already, experiencing expensive Gas & price hikes as it is.

Just a final word on operator maintenance & servicing.

Regular operator, servicing & maintenance, cuts repair bills in half.

We have Mr Google & YouTube, there is no longer any excuse. For a lack of operator maintenance & equipment abuse.

As a friend of mine often, states.

‘If you fail to schedule, servicing & maintenance time for your equipment.

Your Equipment, will simply schedule it for you.
Usually at the most inconvenient time for You!

    In fact;

“Your Equipment will get this bit right.
    Each & every time” Guaranteed.

No Computer, Algorithm or AI required.

As good old, Analogue still works fine,(lol).

    Cheers for now

    Kindest regards

    Stephen

    Year of Manufacture: 2008
Pros: Excellent, Build Quality. Commercial Grade Machine. Thick Deck plating is made to be Rebuilt or Repaired if required Via Welding.
    Cons: In all honesty,
I cannot seriously fault this machine.
It harks back to an earlier time. When build quality was taken seriously by most American consumers.
Attachments: I mostly use mine in Mulching mode. The grass ejection chute has the mulch plate fitted.
    Often operated in dry dusty,conditions.
Caveat: My machine does have the Kawasaki V Twin Engine.
Modifications: Have kept my machine in factory standard configuration.
