Craftsman GT4000
The Craftsman GT4000 garden tractor lawn mower is very similar to the Craftsman GT3000 as well as the Craftsman GT5000 lawn tractors. This model first appeared in the early noughties (2000’s). The Kohler engine that powers it is a 20 hp. This engine is air cooled and started using a 12 volt battery and key starting system. The engine uses a paper element air filter to prevent dust and other particulate matter from entering into the combustion chambers and potentially clogging the engine when it’s firing. Power from the Kohler engine on the GT 4000 is transferred to the wheel using a hydrostatic transmission. This hydrostatic transmission gives the GT4000 unlimited speeds traveling forwards as well as when it’s reversing, making it an automatic.
The engine on the Craftsman GT4000 also powers the mower deck. This mower deck has a cutting width of 48 inches which means that it’s suitable for cutting lawns that are up to 4 acres in size. The mower deck is made from 12 gauge steel and has 6 different operating heights from a high of 4 inches above the ground down to a low of 1.5 inches above the ground. The default setting on the GT 4000 is to just discharge the grass onto the lawn out the side of the mower deck. However if the grass on your lawn is long, this will look very unsightly. So you may be better off collecting it in an optional 2 or 3 bag bagger. However the main drawback to this is that it takes extra time to empty the bagger every time it gets full. The last option on the Craftsman GT4000 for dealing with the grass clippings is to mulch them up into a nutritious and fast rotting mulch. If you have ever owned or operated the GT 4000, then please leave a review of it below to give others an idea of what it is like to own one.

My 94 GT6000 is one of the best ,and last steel tractors done by Craftsman. My understanding is that this series was produced under license by Bolens. Have a spare 6sp transaxle that I’d like to have rebuilt.
