Craftsman DYS4500
The Craftsman DYS4500 garden tractor lawn mower is powered by an Intek engine from Briggs and Stratton. The 2 cylinder engine has a fully pressurized lubrication system with an oil filter. The engine is an OHV model with a total power output of 24 hp. Power from the engine is routed to the wheels on the DYS 4500 through a hydrostatic transmission. This transmission makes the lawn tractor an automatic with no gear changing required. Power to the wheels is controlled by a foot pedal.
The mower deck on the Craftsman DYS4500 lawn mower has a cutting width of 42 inches. This mower deck is raised and lowered manually by a spring assisted hand lever. The mower deck houses 2 blades. The deck can be raised and lowered over 3 inches, from a very low minimum cutting height of just 1 inch above the ground to a high of 4 inches above you lawn. There are a total of 4 gauge wheels attached to the edge of the mower deck which prevent the blades from cutting into the ground and scarring it when you are traveling over uneven patches.
Many people find the DYS 4500 to be adequate for lawns that range in size from about 0.5 acres up to 3 acres in size. One of the problems some people find with the Craftsman DYS4500 is that when you are cutting very long or damp grass, it can choke or stall/cutout as the engine is not quite powerful enough. This is fairly understandable but most people don’t leave their grass get too long before cutting it so it hopefully shouldn’t be a problem. The DYS 4500 is sometimes known as the Craftsman 28726. If you have ever owned or operated a Craftsman DYS 4500 garden tractor lawn mower, then make sure to leave your thoughts on it below to give others an idea of what they should expect from it.

mice built a nest in the engine cylinder cooling fins. engine overheated and destroyed one of the pistons.always check for grass clippings coming out the spark plugs holes for clues to mice making a nest.they also like to chew on the wires.steering is getting real loose might have to fix it after 400 hours light use .5 acres in NY area
The unit has only 400 Hrs since new. The engine develops full power but after a few minutes the engine labors and barely runs. I’ve replaced the carbureator to no avail. Checked the fuel vent on the gas tank to ensure it is not a vacuume issue. Can anyone tell me what the issue is and how to make the necessary fix??
Thank you.
Loving it even now as old as it is
