John Deere 655
The John Deere 655 compact utility tractor is the smallest model in the series that includes three other machines, the John Deere 755, the John Deere 855 and the John Deere 955 compact utility tractors. The JD 655 uses a 3TN66UJ diesel engine from Yanmar. This engine has a total displacement of 0.7 liters from it’s 3 cylinders. The engine is liquid cooled and has a total power output of just 16 hp (absolutely miniscule when compared to more modern compact utility tractors). Starting the engine is fairly easy thanks to a set of glow plugs that are used to preheat the engine. A dry element air filter is used on the engine to prevent small particulate matter from getting into the combustion chambers where it can potentially damage the engine. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 22.4 to 1.
The John Deere 655 compact utility tractor is thankfully an automatic (with 2 ranges: Hi and Lo). This means that you rarely have to think about changing gears on it. This transmission setup is from Sunstrand that gives the JD 655 a top speed of 16.1 kph (10 mph) going forwards, while it’s top speed when reversing is 8 kph (5 mph). There is a choice of chassis for this machine, either a 4X2 2WD or a 4X4 MFWD 4WD. The 2WD model has a total weight of 709 kg (1565 lbs) while the 4WD model is understandably heavier, weighing 741 kg (1635 lbs).
The size of the tires on both the 4X4 and 4X2 John Deere 655 models are the same. The front wheels each measure 20×8-10 (20 inch diameter, 8 inch width, 10 inch rim diameter), while the rear wheels each measure 27×10.5-15 (27 inch diameter, 10.5 inch width, 15 inch rim diameter). The total length of this tractor comes to 2.56 m (101.1 inches). The JD 655 is compatible with many different implements. You can attach a 50 inch mower deck to it (mid mounted) as well as a 46 inch single stage snow blower (front mounted) and a front end loader (John Deere 60).
