John Deere 647A
The John Deere 647A Quik Trak stand on lawn mower is not the most common lawn mower that you’ll see in gardens. This is because most people are used to seeing lawn mowers that are ride on. The JD 647A is powered by a 2 cylinder Kawasaki engine that produces 19 hp to power both the blades and the wheels. This 2 cylinder engine is air cooled and kept from wearing by a full pressure lubrication system. The fuel tank can hold up to 22.7 liters (6 US gallons) of gasoline.
The transmission on the John Deere 647A Quik-Trak is hydrostatic which allows the operator to control each large rear wheel independently. By varying the amount of power that each wheel receives, you are able to execute zero radius turns on this machine. The top speed of the JD 647A is a very decent 13.7 kph (8.5 mph). The mower deck on this JD lawnmower is probably the most famous part of it. It’s a “7 Iron” commercial deck that is 48 inches wide. It has been fabricated from a single piece of 7 gauge steel that means it has no weak points where it could possibly fail. The deck also floats which means that it follows the ground contours during operation giving an incredibly even and smooth cut to your lawn.
Changing the height of the cutting deck on the John Deere 647A is very easy. There is no need to leave the platform at any stage. The deck can cut as low as 1.5 inches above the ground and as high as 5 inches above the ground. It can be adjusted in 0.25 inch increments. If you are looking for larger, stand on lawn mowers that the JD 647A, then you might consider checking out the John Deere 657A or the John Deere 667A stand on mowers.

For such an expensive machine reliability is dismal. There is also a safety issue here, drive failure is sudden and can result in loss of control. Replacment of both pumps and motors will run appox 2500 plus labor. Machine is in the shop as much as it runs. Anyone else have problems like this? possum.pete69@att.net
First summer of use right side drive failed, dealer replaced pump and motor under warantee. Appox 20 hrs later right pump failed again, replaced by dealer even though just out of warentee period. After a short time right pump failed, took it apart and found pistons stuck in bores, was able to lap bores (I am master mechanic with jet engine and machine shop experience) and get pump to operate properly, although we replaced it with a new one and kept the reworked pump for spares. After a few more hours new pump failed, this time removed and disassembled drive motor which had a lot of wheel play; shaft surface where needle roller rides badly spalled. This generated significant metallic contamination which the filter system cannot totally remove due to bypass, and also results in significant radial play at the wheel. Examination of the other wheel for play shows probable bearing wear on left side also. Note that hyd system was flushed and very expensive synthetic oi land filter replaced every time the machine was worked on. Hyd motor is Parker haneffin type. Machine has less than 200 hours.
