Toro TimeCutter SS5000

The Toro TimeCutter SS5000 zero turn mower is one of the bigger machines in the TimeCutter series, especially when compared to the likes of the Toro TimeCutter SS4360 lawnmower or the Toro TimeCutter SS3600 lawn mower. The engine that powers the SS 5000 is a Kawasaki that provides 22 hp and it has an air cooling system. The mower deck on this lawn mower has a cutting width of 50 inches. This mower deck consists of 3 blades working in tandem to give an better finish to your lawn than just one blade alone. The mower deck itself is 4 inches deep and has 3 small wheels located at the front of the to keep it from scraping the ground you are cutting.

The deck on the Toro TimeCutter SS5000 lawnmower sits from as low as 1.5 inches from the ground to as high as 4.5 inches above the ground. There is an optional foot pedal that you can attach to assist you in rapidly raising and lowering the mowing deck on the SS 5000.

The engine on the Toro TimeCutter SS5000 zero turn radius lawn mower supplies power to the rear wheels through a dual hydrostatic transmission. This enables the operator to control the power given to each rear wheel. He/she controls this power by using the lap bars. The rear wheels are responsible for moving the SS 5000 forwards and backwards as well as turning it. The front wheels are actually pretty redundant except for the fact that they obviously prevent the mower deck from scalping the ground it’s traveling over. The top speed of this lawnmower is 11.3 kph (7 mph). If you own a TimeCutter SS5000 mower, then please let others know what they should expect from owning one by leaving a review below listing what you like about it and the operating problems you had with it, if any.

Very Sorry I bought this piece of junk! it spins the tires and fails to turn most of the time. I have to constantly charge the battery as it doesn’t on it own. it’s a gas hog, takes twice as much as my old tractor.

    Year of Manufacture: 2020
    Pros: NONE
Cons: Won’t turn or charge battery

2012/13 toro ss5000 been pretty good. Just done usual tune ups for the most part. Only used 2 belts in 10 years. Residential use but put it the test mowing the perimeter of fields. Electric brake/brake module is a headache. Had to bypass mine which cost me a parking brake but it’s better than $100+ part I’ve changed twice. (Used OEM) doesn’t hold a hill the best sidling or going down hills without making skid marks or losing your line but overall it’s been worth what it cost then. Would buy a toro product again but not with that braking system

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: Almost 10 years old. Over the years I’ve just done tune ups. Been a decent little mower. Kawasaki motor has been great.
Cons: Electric parking brake and brake module. I’ll never buy another mower with that feature. Poor design. Doesn’t hold a hill the best. No hour meter
Modifications: By pass the electric brake module. It sucks cause you won’t have a parking break but that module is a headache. Poor design on toros part.

    Over all good.

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
Pros: Cuts very well and it’s fast. Like the Kawasaki engine, one reason I bought it, and it has been very dependable. Easy to service and parts are very available.
Cons: I put a hour meter on the mower when bought it and it has 89 hours on it now.
Problems: I’m replacing blades, which I can understand, but the spindles need to be replaced too. Toro needs to put a higher quality bearing in the spindles if they are not going to put grease zerks and allow the bearings to lubricated.
I would like to see a ROPS on the mower too.
    Attachments: None
    Modifications: Hour meter

Great Mower! Like all mowers, be careful on those steep hills. Other than that, this mower is great! Cut is very even, looks professional even on thick grass. Love the fast mowing mph. Seems to be very sturdy, and I have a property that takes its toll on mowers. Easy to service and maintain. This is the best mower I’ve ever owned.

Wouldn’t trade it for anything on the market.

    Year of Manufacture: 2013
Pros: I have had mine about 5 months now, and I mow 15 acres of lawn. It is a Texas ranch. I run it wide open, get about 3-3/14 hours on a tankful of fuel, which I consider a bargain, since I usually spend about 10 hours in the saddle each time I mow, and really want to get the job done. I wear earmuffs for the sound, make the fast “end turns” at slow speed to prevent harming the grass, and usually enjoy about 95% of the time I am mowing. wet slopes are a mild problem, and need forethought to navigate successfully. It has been noted that an engine timer would be valubable. Agreed. I would like to see the HEIGHT of the handles adjustable. I haven’t gotten the right adjustment yet for me, I am 5’9, and am stocky. But overall, it is the finest cutter I have ever used, and I have a Massey Ferguson 68 hp tractor with all the toys… when I am finished with the yard, it looks like a golf course. Credit goes to the Toro people up iin Minnesota, for sure. great engineering, great choice of engine. Great tool.
Cons: engine timer, and a fuel level gauge in the cap of the fuel system would be greatly appreciated. Also, night lights on a bar across the front of the unit, at about 3 foot high. In the South, days get hot, and it is a great break to mow at night.
Attachments: a dual bagger attached to the back, even a trailer.

    I LOVE IT!!!

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
Pros: I have owned this mower for about 2 months and am thrilled with it. I had tall thick grass which was hard to mow. This machine went walking thru it without any trouble. The engine never seems to work hard, it just chugs thru the grass with ease. It is quick starting, dependable, and fun to use. The previous mower was a small tractor type with a50” deck which was of good quality but was nowhere near as fun or as fast as this machine. Once you get accustomed to a ZTR, you will never go back to the other style. I love the two speed transmission on this machine. I love the way it handles. It seems to be very well built. It rides so much better than the other machine. I LOVE IT!!!
    Cons: None
    Attachments: Foot lift deck

  11. Bill Davis says:

    1. After my 1st cut I was not completely sold probably due to not being familiar with the way a zero turn operates Previous tractor was a rider that I had for 18 years. After each cut I grew more fond of what this could do and now I love it. I find it fun to cut the grass now and I get done so much quicker than before.

2, Dependability – After the 1st summer of use it has ran very well. I will have to wait to see how the durability of the machine holds up. To sum up this tractor is to say it is a beast.

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
    Pros: 1. One word “Beast”
    2. Leaves a well cut lawn and disburses clipping really well.
    3. Cut my mowing time down from over 3 hours to 1 1/2. 2 1/2 acres.
    4. Rides well.
    5. Deck wash works pretty well.
    6. 22 horsepower Kawasaki engine. Runs nice.
    7. Fast.
Cons: 1. Maybe its me but I find it hard to cut backwards in a straight line.
    2. No roll bar.
    3. No hour meter.
    4. Louder than what I anticipated but considering that you sit right next to an open engine you have to allow for additional noise.
    5. No grease fittings for the deck spindles.
Attachments: 1. I have not used any attachments as of yet.
    Modifications: 1. None

  12. Jeff Cluck says:

Everything is at hands reach and user frendly. The engine fires up right away with no problems. Reviews tell you not to buy a zero turn if you have mowing on hills of 10 degrees or better. I have a small section with approx 20 degrees and if you take it easy and shift to low grar the mower performs great, try to do as much of your hill mowing up hill vs down hill if you can.

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
Pros: I have a new Time Cutter SS 500. Very easy to handle and the two speed transmission is great for tight areas and slopes. I had a Country Clipper with a joy stick before this and Ill tell you the two stick is the way to go for me. Power is abundant I have the 21.5 HP Kawasaki V-Twin. The wash out ports work great, let it run about two or three minutes on each port and it cleans the underside perfect. I did add the hour meter, trailer hitch and a deck mat to finish the mower off. I would recomend this mower to all out there. Very Very nice maching !!!
Cons: I guess if I had to complain it would be about no hour meter, the manuel tells you to service the enging after specific hours of operation. Now you tell me how your supposed to keep track of engine hours correctly with no meter. I just purchashed one.
Attachments: None come with the unit but plenty are available if you go online and look.

This is only the second zero turn I’ve ever been on but when compared to the higher priced Hustler Sport 21hp Briggs single cylinder w/ 48In cut that my dad bought he as well as I were pretty amazed yea it doesn’t have a a fabricated deck or foot pedal to lower and lift the deck but it does have 22 hp Kawasaki v-twin which provides plenty of power and the deck feels sturdy enough that it could take a decent beating. Also I purchased this as a reconditioned/store return unit when I asked the store clerk at local big box store (H-D) why it was brought back he stated the gentlemen who bought it before me simply couldn’t get the hang of driving it after I checked out before buying it i noticed the rollers on the deck hadn’t made contact with the ground yet and the blades hadn’t been engaged yet. Retail price of the unit at the time was $3100.00 I paid $1580.00 I caught it right at the end of summer when they stop purchasing mowers so I got the best deal. Smart speed defiantly a must for a newbie. So all in all great purchase and I wanted to pass along that you may ask a store clerk about recons. before paying double it worked out great for me!

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
    Pros: Kawasaki v-twin
Adjustable handles I’m 6’4″ and found the right adjustment
    50″ cut
    Smart-speed technology for beginners
    sturdy, stable & reliable
Cons: Wish it came with hour meter
    Attachments: None
    Modifications: Added: an hour meter

I love it well worth the money

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: I just purchased the SS 5000 . My grass was 2ft tall and thick.
The SS 5000 ate it up, I was amazed at the ease of
operation and comfort.Thank you Toro for the Smart
    Speed function, Fantastic!!!!!!
Seems very rugged.had it on 20 to 25 degree
slopes preformed better than I could have asked
    for .Tickled to death.
