John Deere 190C

The John Deere 190C lawn mower is the biggest model in the ‘100’ series that JD produced in 2006. Smaller models include the John Deere 145 lawn mower and the John Deere 155C, while if you are looking for something that is much smaller, you may be interested in checking out the John Deere 102 garden tractor lawnmower. The JD 190C is powered by a 25 hp, 2 cylinder, V twin engine. This 0.724 liter (44 cubic inches) engine is started using a 12 volt battery that is recharged using a 14 amp alternator. The engine is air cooled and requires 1.8 liters of oil (from empty) to fully lubricate it.

The fuel tank on the John Deere 190C lawnmower is not particularly big when you consider the size and power of the engine. It has a capacity to hold only 7.9 liters (2.1 US gallons) of petrol which will last of a few hours when operating at maximum capacity, but you would think that John Deere would have used a slightly bigger tank given the size of the engine. The wheelbase on the JD 190C measures 1.24 m (49 inches), while the overall length of the machine comes to 1.75 m (69 inches). However this length does not include attachments such as a bagger that can be attached to the back of the machine or a snowblower/front blade that can be attached to the front of the machine.

The mower deck on the John Deere 190C has a cutting width of 54 inches, although the total width if the machine with the mower deck attached comes to 1.72 m (68 inches). It’s a a lot wider than the cutting width of the mowing deck due to the fact that the discharge flap protrudes a lot. The total weight of the JD 190C comes to 262 kg (579 lbs).

I have had the 170 riding lawn tractor for about 6 months first time I used it broke on the cutting height attachment now I try to start it for the first time this year and it will not start. I have used it once for 1.7 hours and I am very disappointed in the machine for what I paid for it. Stay away from john Deere products.
Going to the dealer tomorrow to try and get my money back. Will not buy or recommend a John Deere to anyone I thought they were the best NOT…

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: None I have only used it once
Cons: Every thing about it spend your money elsewhere
    Attachments: None
    Modifications: none

Over the years, the JD 190C has been utilized for cutting over 4 acres at a time. With the power and 54-inch deck, this mower has more than satisfied my requirements.

    Year of Manufacture: 2006
Pros: – 54-inch deck really gets the job done.
    – 25-hp is enough power to get the big jobs accomplished.
    – Sturdy frame
    – Over 600 hours and 12 years, the 190c is still running strong and reliable.
Cons: – Fuel tank is way too small for this 25-hp engine

Has been a pretty good unit for the money. No engine or electrical problems in the 8 years I have owned it.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
Pros: Nice size cutting deck. Forward/reverse pedal very handy.
Cons: Steering gears are a major weak point. I have had to replace the gears and bushings twice. Now the dash panel, steering column bushing mounts attach are broken and have to have the entire dash panel replaced.

The gas tank is small for the machine’s size. You can only mow for about an hour and a half on a full tank at full throttle.

Has a tendency to leave a 2 inch wide strip of uncut grass when making left or right hand turns.

Modifications: I use a bungee cord to hold the discharge flap up and out of the way so I can mow closer to objects.

Not impressed. John Deeres reputation was diminished with this product. Stick to quality products and workmanship even though it costs more. Making a substandard product just to appeal to a different market is a mistake. I should have recognized this before I made the purchase. I will not make the same mistake twice & tell others at every opportunity.

    Year of Manufacture: 2006
Cons: I have replaced the tension bracket on the mower deck five times since purchased. I dont know what is causing this bracket to literally rip apart & the dealer is unable to provide any answers. About twice a year I replace it. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have also replaced the steering gears once.

    Love all but the steering

    Year of Manufacture: 2006
Pros: Everything about this tractor seems right. It keeps on going.
Cons: The weak link in the system is the steering components. My 190-c has 350 hours on it and i am about to replace the steering gears and bushings for the 4th time. It has always been hard to steer and others who run it can’t believe how hard it is to turn to the left and right. Because it is so hard to steer it puts the gears under a lot of pressure causing them to ware out. Once you feel the gear slip one time you best be ordering new parts or you will wind up in the ditch. Is there and up grade on there parts? if so i would love to buy them. Contact me at

Modifications: Disengaged that stupid back up button !!

  6. Sam S says:

Great service out the 190C since 2006. Other than routine maint the only thing I have had to replace was the battery once.

    Year of Manufacture: 2006
Pros: 54 inch deck gets the job done in a hurry.

Forward and reverse pedals very handy.

I like and use the cruise control and cup holder.

Spark plugs, oil stick, oil filter, oil drain, air filter, and fuel filter all easy to get to for maint.

Cons: The 2.1 gallon tank is undersized for this tractor.
