John Deere JS36
The John Deere JS36 walk behind lawnmower is a step up from the John Deere JS26 push mower. Even though most people will associate JD with tractors and ride on lawnmowers, as this is what they are most famous for, they acutally also make a very much liked and respected JS series of self propelled, walk behind mowers for people with much small grass cutting tasks. The JD JS36 interestingly uses the exact same engine as the JS26. This is a Briggs and Stratton ReadyStart, 4 stroke, 0.19 liter engine that provides 7 ft-lbs of torque to both propel the machine forward and to power the blade.
As the years have progressed, JD has become more and more safety conscious, and the John Deere JS36 is no exception. To use the pull cord recoil starting system, you must be located behind the handlebars (and therefore far away from practically all possible danger). There is no need for gear changing on the JD JS36 as the transmission offers infinite forward and reversing gears that are adjustable from the operator’s station by simply toggling the drive handle either forwards or backwards. John Deere refer to this as their MowMentum drive system.
You will notice a lot of similarities between the John Deere JS36 and the John Deere JS46, most noticeably the fact that they both have a 22 inch cutting widths. They also both have 3 different options for dealing with cut grass. You have a choice of either bagging it, mulching it or discharging it out the side of the machine. The JD JS36 self propelled, walk behind lawn mower is highly recommended by most people who use it. You will also be glad to know that it comes with a 2 year warranty to those purchasing it for residential use.

Might as well plan on watching a ball game if you’re getting ready to mow your lawn with a John Deere.
I agree, I have the same problem with mine.
I bought a John Deere because I wanted a mower that will last. I have had it in the shop twice and I have spent more, money time and energy trying to fix it, so now I am counting it as a loss. John Deere should of never brought this mower to market. John Deere may of made outstanding equipment in the past, but I will not be buying any John Deere equipment in the future.
A mower that doesn’t run is really safe.
Paid John Deere prices but spend more time trying to start than mowing.
Self propell does not always release wheels when pulling mower backwards.
TOTAL INSANE ANGER!
Once the vomiting stopped and I realized that Deere didn’t even use a condom when they stuck it to me, I improvised and made a Frankendeere that runs great.
Perhaps deere would consider just selling frames, no one in their right mind should be strapping a Briggs engine on anything that isn’t Russian and designed to run only once, for 60 seconds.
John Deere builds a good product, but Briggs engines are 100% crap.
A friend of mine ran over the frame of his Honda and gave it to me, so I pulled that crap Briggs motor off mine, got the TIG welder out and now my Deere has a Honda motor and runs 100% of the time. Honda’s drive system is crap, Deere’s motor is crap…so Borg the buggers. A little JD Green paint and I have the hottest mower in town.
Shame on John Deere for getting in bed with Briggs, their engine technology hasn’t improved since 1960.
threw away the Briggs engine, modified the frame to accept a Honda and adapted the “MowMentum” drive system to it.
When I first bought this mower I was very pleased, that didn’t last too long. The self propelled forward worked well with the speed I can walk. Have a little trouble getting it to release and allow me to back up.
John Deere, do me a favor fix my mower or at least tell me how I can by pass the heat shut off sensor (if that is what it’s called) at the exhaust.
The mower is very hard to start if you are lucky enough to get it started.
Won’t start without starting fluid or taking the air cleaner off and dumping gas in the carb.
I will never buy another John Deere product because of how unreliable the product was and the company will not stand behind their product.
Engine is very unreliable. I’ve had the mower in the shop 4 times since buyinger Spring 2010 all because the engine stopped running. They replaced the choke mechanism once and also the entire carburetor another. I continue to have issues where the engine just dies and has to set before it will restart. I’ve owned numerous push and riding mowers over the years and this has been the least reliable. My wife and joke, “nothing doesn’t run like a Deere”
Hard to believe this company has been around more than 150 years if they always built poor quality equipment like this mower. The dealer experience is less than satisfactory, and while it takes four calls to the factory to talk to Shaquisia about your concerns, she blows you off telling you it is the dealer and the suppliers’ fault the mower does not work, then belittles you and hangs up. The dealer complains Deere won’t approve repairs, and the factory says the decision to repair a problem rests with the dealer. If the dealer cannot fix a problem, then it is the fault of the seller.
I notice Lowes no longer sells Deere, maybe they were tired of it being their fault?
Cuts nicely. Not too noisy. Easy to change mowing height. Simple to change oil.
The machine is rather flimsy and does not look like it will make it out of warranty.
The advertising claims about the engine horsepower are laughable.
