John Deere LA175
The John Deere LA175 is the biggest in the 100 series of lawn mowers produced by JD for 2 years from 2008 until 2010 when production moved on the the new ‘100’ series that are denoted with a ‘D’ in front of their number. Smaller garden tractor lawn mowers in this series include theĀ John Deere LA165 lawnmower and the John Deere LA105 garden tractor. The JD LA175 naturally has the biggest engine of all this 100 series of lawnmowers. It gets a massive 26 hp from it’s V twin cylinder, Briggs and Stratton engine. It has a displacement of 0.724 liters (44 cubic inches) and is prevented from getting too hot using an air cooling system. A paper and foam element air filter is used to purify the air intake. Interestingly, this Briggs and Stratton engine is also an Extended Life Series (ELS) engine that will continue working much longer than similar engines made by competitors.
Grass is cut by the John Deere LA175 using it’s 54 inch mower deck that has been constructed from 11 gauge steel for durability. Conveniently, the mowing deck has a built in wash port that you can connect a garden hose to give it a good cleaning. Using the JD LA175 for long periods is not too stressful on the operator thanks to it’s high back seat that has built in lumbar adjustment (although rest periods are always recommend).
The wheels on the John Deere LA175 are quite large to spread it’s 251 kg (552 lbs) weight evenly without leaving large thread-marks. The back tires each measure 22×9.5-12 (22 inch diameter, 9.5 inch width, 12 inch rim diameter) and the front wheels each measure 16×6.5-8 (16 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter). Power from the engine on the JD LA175 reaches the wheels thanks to a Tuff Torq K46 hydrostatic transmission. This makes it an automatic lawn mower with no need to constantly be changing gears.

I love every second I use it. It is an amazing tractor!

Bought this mower from Lowes in 2008. Use it to cut 3.5 acre lawn. Have had to rebuild steering twice due to metal wear on gears. After twelve years of cutting, may have to replace as middle blade system is not cutting level due to deck bend. Engine and transmission have held strong.
Sad that i talked my dad into getting one. His only lasted for about 3 years. He is retired and on a fixed income.
Where is the recall on the transmission? John Deere should step up and do the right thing and replace the transmission.
mower
Will NEVER buy another hydrostat!
Tuff Torq, manufacturer of the transmission told me the same thing. Will NOT work on a hill!
Runs great, pulls hills, starts every time, only problem is the new gas tank won’t fit.
My experience has been down right miserable with this piece of junk!
It sucks
I have had to replace the fuel pump, two of the spindleson the deck and part of the front end was replaced before the warr. ran out ( got lucky on that). When you engage the mower now it is very loud compared to the first year we had it.
Not good.
I see they changed model numbers now, but beware any tractor at box store with a sealed transmission.
LA175 or D170 are not for any type of hills stay away from these machines
problem, problem problem
Big mistake.
