John Deere 830
Unbeknownst to many people, there are actually two distinct John Deere 830 tractors. The older version, which this article is about was built between 1958 and 1961, while the newer 830 was built between 1973 and 1975. For information on the ‘newer’ John Deere 830, click here. The engine powering older JD 830 is a designed and built by John Deere in house. This engine is diesel powered and naturally aspirated. The engine is a 2 cylinder model with a total displacement of 7.7 liters. The engine fires at a compression ratio of 16:1. Unlike many newer tractors that have dry type air filters, this engine uses an oil bath. The engine is prevented from overheating thanks to a liquid cooling system that holds 22.7 liters of water. The engine is keystarted.
The John Deere 830 uses an synchronized gearbox to control it’s speed. This gives the tractor 6 speeds going forwards and one for reversing. The JD 830 is built on a 4X2 2WD chassis with power being transferred to the rear wheels. These rear wheels measure 15-34 (15 inch width, 34 inch rim diameter). The front wheels carry far less weight and measure 7.5-18 (7.5 inch width, 18 inch diameter). The total operating weight of this tractor comes to 3916 kg (8635 lbs), but it’s safe maximum ballasted weight comes to 5440 kg (11,995 lbs).
One of the interesting features about the John Deere 830 is that it’s paintwork is very different to most JD tractors. It’s yellow horizontal strip is much wider. When this large stripe approaches the front of the hood, it turns horizontal. The JD 830 tractor is the largest in the series that includes the John Deere 530, the John Deere 630 and the John Deere 730 tractors.
