John Deere 6400
The John Deere 6400 is a much liked tractor produced in the nineties from ’92 to ’98 in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg in Germany. The JD 6400 superseded the John Deere 2955. It had an 85 hp, turbocharged, 4 cylinder, 4.5 liter, CD4045 engine made by John Deere themselves. It required up to 17.5 liters of engine coolant and was diesel, not gasoline powered. The transmission on the 6400 is choice of 4 different configurations: 1) A SyncroPlus meaning that with it’s triple 9 inch, wet disc PermaClutch, meaning it had 12 gears going forward and 4 in reverse. 2) A PowrQuad partial power shift, again with a triple 9 inch, wet disc PermaClutch which in this configuration gives it both 16 gears going forward and in reverse. 3) A SyncroPlus Creeper which gives 21 forward speeds and 7 reverse speeds. 4) A PowrQuad Creeper which provides a massive 28 speeds going forward and another 28 in reverse.
The John Deere 6400 has a wheelbase of 2.4m (94.5 inches) and has a shipping weight of between 3970 kg (8754 lbs) and 3450 kg (7605 lbs) depending on whether or not the 6400 version you are getting is 4WD or 2WD and comes with either a cab of ROPS. There are also a number of front end loader attachments suitable for the 6400. The John Deere 620 loader has a bucket width of 1.54 m ( 61 inches) and has a breakout force of 2060kg (4542 lbs). The John Deere 640NSL loader has bucket width of 1.54 m (61 inches) and a breakout force of 2075 kg (4575 lbs). The John Deere 640SL front end loader also has a bucket width of 1.54 m (61 inches) but has an increased breakout force when compared to the others of 2360 kg (5205 lbs).
The John Deere 6400 was an incredibly popular tractor in it’s day for the very simple reason that it was not a massive, powerful and very expensive model. It was a mid range model, yet powerful enough to lift and pull heavy loads, but not so big that it was awkward in tight spaces.
