John Deere 1640
The John Deere 1640 tractor is not the most well known machine from the team at JD. The tractor was built in the Mannheim production facility which is located in Germany. The tractor appeared in the early eighties from 1980 until 1982. When buying it brand new, you had a choice of chassis, either a 4X2 2WD chassis or a 4X4 MFWD 4WD chassis. The engine powering the JD 1640 is built in house. It’s a John Deere diesel engine. The engine is rated at 2500 RPMs. It has a displacement of 3.9 liters and has a total power output of 62 hp. The engine is a 4 cylinder and uses liquid cooling to prevent it from getting too hot.
The engine on the John Deere 1640 powers the wheels using one of 2 different gearboxes. The first choice gives the tractor 16 speeds going forward and 8 for when it’s reversing. The second, smaller choice of gearbox gives the JD 1640 8 speeds going forward and 4 when it’s reversing. Depending on the chassis the total weight of the tractor varies. With a 2WD chassis, the tractor weighs 3360 kg (7409 lbs) while with a 4WD chassis, it weighs in at 3630 kg (8004 lbs). The tractor has a total length of 3.93 m (155 inches).
The John Deere 1640 has a minimum turning radius of 10.2 m when it’s built on a 4WD chassis and with a 2WD chassis it has a minimum turning radius of 7.6 m. The size of the front wheels on the tractor also vary depending on the chassis. On the 2WD chassis, the front wheels each measure 7.5-18 (7.5 inch width, 18 inch rim diameter) while on the 4WD chassis, the front wheels each measure 11.2-28 (11.2 inch width, 28 inch rim diameter). The rear wheels on both chassis choices are the same size. They each measure 13.6-38 (13.6 inch width, 38 inch rim diameter). You can leave a review of the JD 1640 below.
