The John Deere 8870 tractor is part of the JD 8070 series of machines. It is an articulated tractor built on a 4WD chassis.  The JD 8870 uses a diesel engine to power it. This is a 6 cylinder that John Deere manufacture themselves. The engine has a displacement of 10.1 liters and is cooled using a liquid cooling system. The engine has an aspirator combined with a dual paper air filter to prevent dust and other particulate matter from getting into the engine where it can impede performance and damage the engine. This JD engine produces 350 hp. The engine is connected to one of 3 different gearboxes to power the wheels. The first of these gearboxes is a JD PowrSync which is a partial power shift transmission that gives you 24 forward and 6 reversing gears. The other 2 choices are either the Syncro or PowrSync transmissions. These both give the tractor 12 forward and 6 reversing gears. All three gearboxes use a hydraulic wet disc clutch to change gears.

An engine that produces 350 hp hopefully gives you an idea of how big the tractor is. The John Deere 8870 weighs 15,934 kg (35,130 lbs). This weight is transferred to the ground through the front and rear wheels. Both are the same size. They each measure 20.8-38 (20.8 inch width, 38 inch rim diameter). The wheelbase of the machine is 3.4 m (134 inches).

The John Deere 8870 is one of the more powerful in the John Deere 8070 series of tractors. The 2 less powerful and smaller machines are the John Deere 8570 and the John Deere 8770 tractors.
