The machine uses a diesel Yanmar engine to power it. This engine is liquid cooled and is turbo charged. The maximum power output from the engine comes to 37.1 hp from this 3 cylinder engine. The fuel tank which supplies the engine with diesel and the fuel tank has a capacity to hold up to 49.2 liters (10.8 US gallons) which allows it to operate for a very long time before it has to be refueled. Power from the engine on the JD 7400 Terrain Cut is transferred to the 3 wheels of the lawn mower through a hydrostatic transmission that makes it an all wheel drive machine.
