Husqvarna YTH1842
The Husqvarna YTH1842 garden tractor lawn mower is not the most powerful tractor mower that you can purchase from Husqvarna. The engine powering it is a Briggs and Stratton Intek engine that produces 18hp which is pretty measly when you compare to other machines that Husqvarna make like the Husqvarna GTH26V52LS and the Husqvarna GTH27V48LS tractor lawn mowers. The Intek engine uses a full pressure lubrication system to keep the moving parts fully oiled and moving efficiently. The engine is started using a 12 volt battery that is then recharged via a 9 amp alternator once the engine is running. The fuel tank on the YTH 1842 has a capacity to hold up to 7.6 liters (2 US gallons) of gasoline.
The transmission system on the Husqvarna YTH1842 is a Hydro Gear 322-0510 hydrostatic that makes it an automatic. This means that there is no gear changing required during operation, it has infinite speeds going forwards and in reverse also. The rear tires, which power the YTH 1842 measure 20×10-8 (20 inch diameter, 10 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter, while the front wheels each measure 15×6-6 (15 inch diameter, 6 inch width, 6 inch rim diameter).
The mower deck on the Husqvarna YTH1842 has a cutting width of 42 inches. This mower deck can operate as low as 0.5 inches above the ground and as high as 3.5 inches above the ground. In total it has 6 different operating heights each of which differ by about 0.5 inches. The blades are engaged electronically and they are driven by a belt drive system. The deck is raised and lowered via a hand lever that is spring assisted. On the leading edge of the mower deck, there are 2 anti scalping wheel to force the deck to follow the contours of the ground as you travel over it. The YTH 1842 is a great tractor mower for lawns that range in size from about 0.5 acres up to 2.5 acres.

First occasion.
My first impression – I was delighted with its operation.
The motor was quiet, smooth, very responsive, even with the cutters engaged compared to other more recent models.
Personally I prefer the lever action accelerator to the foot pedal because it gives a more even acceleration over bumps and traveling up and down and across hills.
The cutters seemed to mulch taller grass better without leaving tire tracks and mounds of grass on the lawn.
The steering felt like it was power assisted with an excellent turning radius.
The fuel economy was also better with a smaller 2 gallon US capacity.
Since it’s a lighter machine at 600 lbs compared to others I have driven, I felt the difference trying to turn sharply up a hill without losing traction. I would recommend additional weights for the rear wheels for this application.
Regarding reliability I can’t comment yet.
Safety features seem to be well thought out with seat sensor stop-not too sensitive when riding on a slope, reverse operation ‘on’ key position, attachment clutch switch, clutch brake pedal, parking brake. The only other device could be radar detection … maybe it’s coming!
