John Deere 108
The John Deere 108 lawnmower is a very old machine from the team at JD. Way before the likes of the John Deere L108 or the John Deere L110 lawnmowers became available, the JD 108 was an incredibly popular grass cutter. This lawnmower is powered by a Briggs and Stratton gasoline engine. Specifically it’s a Briggs and Stratton 191707 one cylinder, 0.318 liter engine. It’s air cooled and has a power output of 8 hp. Thankfully the engine has an electric starter, as pull cord recoil starting systems on older lawnmowers tend to be very labor intensive and are difficult to start without a huge amount of pulling.
Power from the engine on the John Deere 108 lawnmower gets to the wheels thanks to a transmission that gives it 5 gears when traveling forwards and one gear for reversing. The top speed of the JD 108 comes to 7.9 kph (4.9 mph) which is very reasonable for a lawnmower that was built such a long time ago. The actual production period of this lawn mower lasted for 6 years from 1979 until 1985 when production on it stopped. It has a fuel tank that is capable of holding 9.5 liters (2.5 US gallons) of gasoline.
As the John Deere 108 is an older machine with a smaller engine compared to many of those on offer these days, it only weighs in at 183 kg (405 lbs). The tires on the JD 108 are consequently adequately sized to evenly distribute this load into the ground. Each rear tire measures 18×6.5-8 (18 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width, 8 inch rim diameter) while each front wheel measures 13×5-6 (13 inch diameter, 5 inch width, 6 inch rim diameter). This is obviously a very old and famous lawnmower, that can still be used today for mowing your lawn. However, the warranty on these has obviously long expired and on top of this, getting parts for it is going to be much more difficult than getting parts for a newer model, so you may find that it’s in your best interests to buy a newer model on lawn mower.
