John Deere 240
The John Deere 240 lawnmower is a reasonably old ride on lawn mower that was produced at the Horicon plant in Wisconsin over a period of 5 years from 1987 when it first starting coming off the assembly line until 1992 when production on it finished. As ride on John Deere mowers weren’t particularly powerful back then, the JD 240 had a 14 hp engine to power the blade and drive it forward. This engine is a Kawasaki FC420V, gasoline model with natural aspiration. The one cylinder engine has a displacement of 0.4 liters (26 cubic inches). The engine is prevented from overheating using an air cooling system. The engine uses a 12 volt battery-key-start system to get going. Once the engine is running, a 13 amp alternator recharges the battery.
The transmission on the John Deere 240 guiding power to the wheels is a Kanzaki gear shift transmission. This gives the JD 240 6 gears for when it’s traveling forwards and 1 gear for reversing. It has a top speed of 11.3 kph (7 mph). The fuel capacity of the gas tank comes to 11.4 liters (3 US gallons) which is enough to power to give it over 2 hours of continuous operation without needing to be refilled. This lawn mower is first and foremost built for cutting lawns and as such can accommodate either a 38 inch mower deck or a 46 inch mower deck. Do keep in mind that the overall width of the mower with these mowing decks attached will be much greater than their cutting width due to their discharge flaps.
There are also a number of other implements that can be attached to the John Deere 240. These include a 42 inch snow blower and a 46 inch front blade. If you are looking for a bigger version of this lawn mower, then you may be interested in the John Deere 260. It did my father an excellent job year around. He passed on so I need to find out the value. Will sell tiller seperately. The hood looks like new.Very well kept & did a very good job mowing and moving snow in Iowa, never set out side. Changed carborator and runs excellent.
Had machine 20 plus years, kids mowed 20 plus lawns and two cemeteries for years. Machine finally got tired and bought a zero turn. Trading zero turn in for another JD lawn tractor
This is one great tractor. I used to swear by the old cub cadet tractors (I still have 3 of them), but this tractor is much better. The steering is still tight and the motor still going strong.
Best tractor I’ve ever owned. I started mowing lawns with my dad’s two Wheel Horses. I spent more time fixing those than I did mowing. When it was time for me to purchase a tractor, the only tractor I would consider was John Deere. Never regretted my decision.
The tractor is bullet proof. John Deere does not make them like this anymore. It’s never had to be serviced.
Bought it new in 89 and have used it every day since. It still looks good except for the peeling paint. It has always been garage kept and still runs and cuts just like it always has. I hope to get another 20 years out of it. I have no plans to replace it.
Very great mower, tough, works great for such an old model.
Nothing but great times on this mower and plan to use it indefinitely, may just change motors when mine finally gives out, but no signs yet.
Tough as hell. Is a very good running machine. I use it alot to haul wood out of the woods durning the winter. Doesn’t show any sighns what so ever of slowing down. Good quality machine compared to the new ones today with their thin cheap metal and plastic. Doesn’t owe me a dime.
Just replaced mower drive belt for first time last summer,I go thru a set of blades a year, but use it like a brush hog some times. cutting sumac and what ever gets in my way. looks and runs like new. I cut 4 acres of grass( not lawn) only proplem I have had Is dirt got in gas tank and it was a major pain to remove tank to completely clean it out. all in all its great machine……
when it was new my uncle purchased a 18hp yardman we hooked them together back to back and had a pull off. I drug him across the field. yes I was 50 and boys will be boys… LOL he has since had 5 different mowers and I am still mowing away with mine.
Allways has worked well
I mow a very rough and hilly yard with mine. It drives right through the rough wash outs with no problem. It has a good built front end and steering components that have never failed me. It climbs the hills with plenty of power for a small tractor..
Runs like a sewing machine. 24 years old and shows no signs
whatsoever of slowing down. If anyone is lookiing for a great
used mower for a reasonable price that was built to last, I highly
recommend a 240.
Built solid, none of that cheap metal junk a lot of today’s mowers are
made of. Powerful frame. Great engine, none of the second-rate
stuff of today.
were easier to come by today for this mower.
I have been very well satisfied with this equipment.
Good, just purchased an EZ turn model
