John Deere D170
The John Deere D170 is the biggest lawnmower from the 100 series of lawnmowers produced by JD (this 100 series is from the year 2011). The JD 170 is very similar to the John Deere D160 as they both have the same engine, the Briggs and Stratton ‘Extend Life Series’ (ELS) model 44, which has a displacement of 0.725 liters (or 44 cubic inches). This air cooled engine requires 1.9 liters of oil to make sure that it remains full lubricated throughout it’s operation. The fuel tank on the regular model holds 15.1 liters (4 US gallons) of gasoline while the California model holds 9.1 liters (2.4 US gallons), so you’ll find that most contractors will use the regular model as it means less time spent refueling.
Power from the engine is transferred to the wheels through a 4×2 2WD chassis by a hydrostatic gear box. This means that there is no gear changing on the John Deere D170 lawnmower. Instead you just have 2 pedals; 1 for moving forwards, the other for reversing. All models from the 100 series have the same top speed of 8.8 kph (5.5 mph). However the wheels on the JD D170 are bigger than on the smaller models. The front tires measure 16×6.5-8 (16 inch diameter, 6.5 inch width and 8 inch rim diameter), while the rear wheels measure 22×9.5-12 (22 inch diameter, 9.5 inch width, 12 inch rim diameter).
There are a huge range of different attachments that are compatible with the John Deere D170. These obviously include baggers and many different types of John Deere snow blowers. However there is also a ton more of other attachments such as utility carts, scrapers, harrows, rotary brooms and thatcherators. You will find that the JD D170 lawn mower is a fantastic piece of equipment that is more than enough for taking care of your garden and for other chores such as snow clearing during the winter and clearing your driveway of leaves when used with the right attachments.

This is the worst mower i have ever used. I am extremely dissatisfied with the design of this E170 mower. I do not recommend it for anything other than possibly a FLAT small city lawn. The seat is too narrow and flat and one slips off on the slightest incline. The axle width is far too narrow for the height. Only one wheel drives at a time so if it spins you are stuck. A limited slip version would be a huge improvement. This is definitely a city mower and is not a serious lawn tractor.
I purchased this pile of junk D170 from Home depot for 3250 $ Cad as my very first NEW lawn tractor .In the past I have had old sears , Yard man ect and never had a problem with inclines or heavy loads. This JD D170 is complete garbage. The K46 transaxle should never have been used on ANY lawn tractor. With only 70 hrs on the clock I lose about 1/3 of my forward speed on even a 3 % incline and forget about pulling a coring aerator. After 13 minutes the tractor came to a complete halt . DO NOT BUY anything with this transaxle . Further more it came from home depot with the throttle / choke cable adjusted wrong so the choke would not fully close making cold starting a 20 second cranking affair. I corrected that and at 20 hours a bolt holding the deck broke . Again I fixed it . I have had enough of this junk heap. Its for sale now at 70 hours
I have really come to hate my John Deere. I enjoy mechanical maintenance, and I take care of this vehicle. $2500 down the tube.
The first 2 years were reasonable. We use the vehicle on the weekends to mow the lawn and pull a small harrow to manage horse manure. We have a 5 horses on flat land. In the beginning, I thought I might have purchased “too much” vehicle.
Now — after 220 hrs of use — I have very little power after 20 minutes of operation. I end up pulling the harrow myself back top the shed, and the vehicle can barely get back to the garage with NO LOAD. No mower, no harrow. I weigh about 200 lbs.
I haven’t abused or overworked this vehicle. What a disappointment. Welcome any thoughts.
– JD Wagon – used less than 1x per month
– JD Leaf sweeper – hardly used as all because it doesn’t work that well
I replaced my L130 with the D170 because of two transmission failures. The L130 had the same transmission as this D130, (why I didn’t know that until I had the thing delivered is my stupidly). But so far so good. Very please with the feel, if that makes sense. It a very comfortable ride even over semi-rough terrain. Initially it was chopping up the lawn with a very uneven cut. Adjusted the deck according to the instruction in the owners manual and all is well. Why It was delivered that way is surprising to say the least. Removing the deck is something I will do every winter to reduce total weight while the snow plow is attached, so I’m pleased that it is a simple 10 minute task to get it disconnected. Had the two John Deere 40lbs weights and the bracket they sit on attached all winter and with tire chains installed it had very good traction even with the amount of snow we received. Easy start up and the engine and mower deck are pleasantly quiet compared to my old L130. Turning radious is excellent. I didn’t think going from a 48″ deck to a 54″ would make that much of a difference, but it really does. I can’t go any bigger, (nor do I need to), because if I did, it wouldn’t fit through the doors on my shed. So all in all every thing is a win, win, win. I love it… Just worries about that darn transmission. If it’s going to fail prematurely I hope it’s durning the warranty period.
Just ok, no more no less……but the snow blower set up was terrible, i had nothing but trouble.
Not good for inclines, wider tires and more agressive tread design is needed or some kind of 4WD option, something JD should improve on.
Got in a bind more than once pinned in front of tree going down hill with the big mowing deck, tires only spun trying to back up and didn’t have the strenght to pust it backwards up hill. Some Cub Cadet and Ariens models have wider tires, accordingly seriously though about them but went for the JD because the snow thrower attachment was readialy available. Seat belt would also be nice when mowing on inclines.
Like it a lot.
Wish I had the extra $1500 for the snow blower.
It’s quiet, no need for hearing protection.
Very tight turning radius, especially for a 54″ deck. Actually turns tighter than the 38″ Cub that I still own.
Fuel filling at the rear, away from the hot engine is a definite plus.
Deck flushing system.
Removing the deck for maintenance is not as convenient as the Cubs I used to sell, but how many times a year do you think you have to remove that thing anyway? With the deck flushing system the only time you need to get under it is to change blades.
Any safety equipment is for your protection and John Deere’s legal butt covering because certain people aren’t smart enough to keep any and all children off the lawn while it is being mowed.
They are trying to make the machine idiot proof.
The unfortunate thing is, about the tiime Deere achieves this, the consumers come out with a better educated idiot – with a lawyer.
I had originaly bought this tractor online while on assignment in germany to replace my aging and non-functional tractor. The delivery was accepted by my wife and the JD dealer fully explaned and demonstrated the tractor and attachments to her, What all that means is my wife is the anti-christ of mechanical equipment and if she can operate and mow 3 acres weekly, than this tractor is the answer to anyone who is considering a new lawn tractor.
this is a excellent vaule for mowers under 3000.00 cuts 6 in grass with a breeze short turning radius is great around shurbs @engine does not labor on hills this is my first deer and am very pleased with mower
so far this seems like a great machine.
Should never bought a john deere big price bad company Wheel weights would help this monster but no holes for weights > the siutcase weights are too expensive
Should never bought a John Deere
Also the cutting height handle is in the wrong place try to get out rams up your butt cannot slide out without hitting the handle
