John Deere D160
The John Deere D160 is one the 2 biggest models in the 100 series for the year 2011 released by John Deere. The only model that’s bigger is the John Deere D170. Smaller models include the John Deere D130 and JD D110. The engine powering the JD D160 is a Briggs and Stratton ‘Extended Life Series’ (ELS) 44. The model number is ’44’ as it has a displacement of 44 inches (or 0.725 liters in metric terms). The gasoline engine is a 2 cylinder V twin that’s air cooled and has natural aspiration. The total power output from the engine is 24 hp. The engine uses cartridge air filters to clean the air intake before it passes through to the combustion chambers. The 12 volt battery used for starting the engine is charged by a 16 amp alternator.
The John Deere D160 comes with a choice of fuel tanks, depending on which model you buy (California model or regular model). The fuel tank that comes with the California model can hold up to 9.1 liters (2.4 US gallons) of gasoline. However the regular model can hold way more gasoline in it’s tank, 15.1 liters (4 US gallons). So if you are a contractor or you have a huge amount of grass to cut and don’t want to be constantly refilling it, then make sure to go for the regular model and not the California JD D160.
The weight of the John Deere D160 comes in at 240 kg (528 lbs). It’s maximum width when the mowing deck is attached is 1.53 m (60 inches). The mower deck itself has a cutting width of 48 inches. Fortunately, the JD D160 is useful in the winter as well as the summer. While you won’t have much grass to cut in the winter, you can use attach a JD 44 inch snow blower to clear snow. But it can also take a huge variety of other attachments which makes this garden tractor lawnmower very flexible indeed.

The first year I had it the drive belt came off and ever since I have had it I replaced the deck belt 2 to 3 times a season It has 126 HRS on it . I do not know who designed the pulley system and had placed the tension pulley at an angle but it was a big mistake . My first and last JD nothing but JUNK .
My D160 has less than 30 hours and camshaft has failed. Time has expired for warranty so this is out of my pocket. I’m using an 19 year old John Deere that is still running fine, never even had the spark plug replaced. I think it’s time to switch brands, the extra money for JD was wasted!
After 10 Years I Thought I Would Upgrade from My LA130 to a Bigger More Powerful Model the D160. Needless to Say I Liked My LA130 Much Better, She Started Right Up & She Never Ran Out or Used To Much of it.
I Will Be Doing Some Modifications to Mine & See How it Goes But as of Today I would not Buy the D160 However Maybe I Got a Lemon.
My Biggest Issue it Takes So Long to Turn Over / Start.
With a 25HP I Would Like / Expect it to go Faster.
The Rear Sticker Reflectors Would be Nice if They Were Lights for Night Time Use.
poor on gas very loud
Over all I really like this machine and expect that it will provide many years of service at a competitive price. I’m only slightly disappointed in the dealer setup – but I must confess to being fairly picky and deck leveling was something that was going to be checked either way.
Even though it’s new, I checked reliability as 5 stars. Time and usage will be better to determine reliability.
The toe in on the front end seems excessive but that may be a contributor to its ease of turning. The steering linkage is not adjustable and I suspect somewhat rapid tire ware due to the toe.
The gimmicky little storage box on the right fender needs to be taped shut for trailering.
Additionally, the front wheel grease fittings (both wheels) were just barely started in the holes. One blew out upon first greasing. Remove; re-tap; install correctly – good to go.
