John Deere D140

The John Deere D140 is very similar to the John Deere D130 as they both have the same engine, the Briggs and Stratton ’40’ engine that produces 22 hp. This 2 cylinder engine also transfers power to the wheels using a Kanzaki Tuff Torq T40 hydrostatic transmission that gives it infinite gears in both forwards and reverse. The capacity of the fuel tank on the JD D140 is 15.1 liters (4 US gallons) and is located towards the rear of the machine.

The front wheels on the John Deere D140 measure 15×6-6 (15 inch diameter, 6 inch width, 6 inch diameter of rims) while the rear tires measure 20×10-8 (20 inch diameter, 10 inch width, 8 inch diameter of rims). While the tires as well as the machine itself may seem quite large, the JD D140 has a very small turning radius of just 0.46 m (18 inches). The seat on this mower is very well designed to offer the operator maximum comfort during long operating hours. It is 0.38 m (15 inches) high to support your back and can be adjusted up to 0.14 m (5.5 inches) forwards or backwards so that you can guarantee a comfortable operating position.

The mower deck on the John Deere D140 has a cutting width of 48 inches and is constructed from very strong 12 gauge steel. The mower deck has 13 different operating positions from as low as 1 inch from the ground to 4 inches above the ground. It can be adjusted in 1/4 inch increments which means that the operator will always be able to get pretty much the exact cutting height they want. While the cutting width of the mowing deck is 48 inches, it’s total width is a lot higher at 1.53 m (60 inches). This is because of the fact that it has a pretty large discharge chute. The total weight of the machine 223 kg (491 lbs) when there are no attachments or fuel. If you are looking for a bigger version of this lawn mower, then check out the John Deere D150 garden tractor.

The only thing I have going as a positive is the pretty colors. It has trouble starting in all weather. You can’t choke it without almost breaking the handle pushing it forward. When it is on uneven ground, it cuts deep on the ones side, and completely misses the other. The height adjustment grabs my pants on mounting or dismounting. To disassemble the mower deck takes about an hour, and more when you remount it in the spring.
After only 1 year and the battery being on a maintainer all winter (John Deere labeled battery), it completely died. I bought an aftermarket from Tractor supply that has lasted 3 years so far.
This is definitely the worst purchase I have ever made.
It is a sad thing that my 18 year old Craftsman outperforms this unit. I will never buy another green and yellow anything.

    Year of Manufacture: 2014
Pros: It is Green and yellow. Pretty colors, and that is about all.
Cons: 3 years in has trouble starting in any weather. Cut’s grass irregularly, and leaves strips that you have to go back and cut again.
    Attachments: Lawn chute and bag.
    Modifications: none

I don’t think I would buy a John Deere lawn tractor again. You are paying for the name and I have not seen the reliability in the D140. Every time I get on this tractor I am asking myself if it is going to make it through this cutting without needing repair.

    Year of Manufacture: 2014
Pros: Does a good job when its working right
Cons: I have had this in the shop three times since new. Two times for the wire harness going to the PTO. This time for the pully wearing out. I have 200 hours on this D140 and I always maintain according to the instructions.

when I bought it the bearings made a lot of noise I told dealer but never did anything about it. They said that they would come out to see it but never did. Finley I took the lower assem apart myself. Three baring assys. were rough and I replaced them. One of the plates mounting plate for a pully was bent and the shaft mount was worn so bad that the pully wobbled . I replaced it. I bought a new belt . the old one was oiled soaked. When I switched the blade assem. the engine almost stalls out. Every year I complained about the noise and they would say that they would come out and look at it ,but never did !

I got tired of it this year and did the work on it my self !

    At least it don’t scream

when the blades are turned on !

Not Happy, too much cut grass blowing ALL over the operator.

    Year of Manufacture: 0
    Pros: Starts good, runs good.
Cons: Throws grass ALL over me, Gas Tank reads 3/4 when empty, gauge is unreliable. Don’t like the cutting level handle on the right side either.
    Attachments: Leaf/Grass Bags.

Overall, a little disappointed. For my first ever riding mower, and buying a JD, and paying that price, I expected a four and five star mower. Not a two and three star.

    Year of Manufacture: 2017
Pros: This was my first riding mower purchase, so it’s hard to compare. Starts good. Smooth cutting with those deck wheels. Easy to change oil and filters. Pretty quiet, I guess. Good power.
Cons: Poor cutting as in leaves some uncut thick grass. Went through deck belt and drive belt at about 120 hours.
Kind of feels like a “cheap” made mower for a JD. I read past reviews here before submitting this. Many of those comments were true. I have had my pants pocket get caught in height adjustment lever. I think the only “D” series that didn’t come with a front bumper. Had to buy separate. Headlights are dim and do get dust inside.

Of the several mowers I have owned, not the best when you consider the price that you pay for the name John Deere

    Year of Manufacture: 2014
Pros: Easy to use. Good start up.
Cons: Cruise control knob on right side. Cannot rest your leg against. side. Hurts leg. Height adjustment lever on dismount from left side, can lower your cutting height by accident. Will not cut all tough grass or weeds on first cut. Leaves some uncut. Must make another past. . Its not a dull blade, like this from day one. Hood comes unattached easily when opening. Seat is too slick, you slide when cutting on the side of a small incline. $100.00 charge for pickup for repairs, even under warranty. You pay because of defects in the manufacture of the mower. Maybe this is now the norm on all lawn tractors. I preferred my old Scott’s mower once made by John Deere, that was sold by Lowe’s. Much cheaper price, better performance. This mower was a gift from my daughter. I would not have spent that much. There are other brands, cheaper and better designed. I often wonder, when using this mower, if the designers, actually rode it. Too many design issues, most that could easily be fixed. i.e. Move the cruise control knob. Change the material on the seats. Increase the tension on the height adjustment lever

This mower is a piece of crap. Ive only had it a little over a year. Its pulleys are going out ,ive replaced the belts twice. And its only got 140 hours. Come on john Deere wth. My 130 was twice the mower. Maybe you should paint them lemon yellow. Im so dissapointed in this product, im not sure i even want anymore jd products.

This mower cuts the very worst of any mower I have ever had. I am going to change the blades to a mulcher type and change the tires to some that have a good aggressive tread. Lots of things I will have to fix.

    Year of Manufacture: 2014
    Pros: starts and runs good.
Cons: the most expensive mower I have ever bought and the worst. blades are made to cut 3 inch grass. who cuts their grass that often? I have 4 yards to cut which is about 6 acres. I have to cut each one about 3 times to get a smooth cut. the tires get stuck on wet grass. I hate the backup switch. they should have put some handles on the back fenders because not everybody has flat yards. the handle that adjusts the deck height should have been bent outwards so it wouldn’t catch your pants every time you get off. headlights are lousy and get dust in them real easy.I am going to replace the blades and the tires and fix the other problems. My other mowers were cub cadet and they were better made. Sorry I ever bought this mower.
Modifications: First thing I added was a front bumper.

Would not recommend this model to anyone.

    Year of Manufacture: 2012
    Pros: None
Cons: This is the worst tractor I’ve ever owned. The belt on the deck has broken twice in 4 months and I have to mow the law twice because it cuts so poorly. It leaves strips of grass uncut. Don’t waste your money on this piece of garbage.

  10. MICHAEL says:

    OUTSTANDING

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: THIS IS MY THIRD JOHN DEERE, AND THE BEST YET. I MOW A 3.5 ACRE LAWN WITH PLENTY OF GARDENS AND SITTING AREAS TO MANUEVER AROUND. IT RIDES SMOOTH CUTS GREAT AND HANDLES PERFECTLY! EVERYTIME I GET A NEW MODEL I MARVEL AT HOW MUCH BETTER IT PERFORM’S THEN THE PREVIOUS.
QUITE FRANKLY I SUPPOSE YOU COULD GET THE JOB DONE CHEAPER BUT WHO JUST WANTS TO GET THE JOB DONE”RIGHT”?
THANKS JOHN DEERE I AM 86 AND LOOK FORWARD TO MY NEXT ONE MAYBE IT WILL HAVE LASER BEAMS INSTEAD OF BLADES.
    Cons: ARE YOU KIDDING

Nice tractor Used it all last summer had no problems with it. Starts right up ,Drives good ,mows good, turns good, quite to run , I’d have to say it’s one hell a tractor to own.

2 Months. The only bad thing…….a deck pulley was put on wrong from factory, shearing the belt clean off. While loading the tractor the saftey chains for the ramps were not properly attached, and the ramps slipped, then the back tires rolled off the back of the pickup truck, Smashing the hood to pieces. I was able to jump from the tractor and got away with a scrape on my knuckle. The tractors repair, Which was supposed to be under warranty, ended up being $350. The machine was brand new. I am 13 and i am just about the only user of this tractor, doing minor landscaping and all my families yard work because i like to. My father and i were not, NOT happy. Overall, this is a great tractor and i recommend it for the average homeowner with a 1/2-2 acre property, obstacles or not.

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: Tight turning radius. Electronic PTO. RIO Switch irritating although safe. 48″ deck with piece for hose attachment for easy cleaning.
Cons: Headlights dont provide the best to see directly in front, hood easily damageable

This lawn tractor surprised me at how smooth it is to ride and you don’t feel like it is going to throw you out of the seat. The cut quality pleasantly surprised me and the engine provides plenty of power for even tall grass. This lawn tractor did pretty well while mowing my ditches. I wish the rear end was a little heavier, but it did good. The engine is very quiet and I think it sounds really good. I haven’t owned this unit for very long, but I am happy so far. My John Deere Dealer experience was great and a pleasure to do business with. Don’t be afraid to buy one of these models.

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: Surprisingly comfy ride, easily and nicely cuts the grass, not too bad on hills, smooth cut, nice hydro, and great looks. I am happy with the purchase. I haven’t had it long enough to rate the reliability.
Cons: Wish the rear end was a little heavier and a larger fuel tank.

for the machine cost you cant go wrong, mows really good, and drives good too

    Year of Manufacture: 2011
Pros: just got this mower 3 days ago, have only mowed with it 1 time, i have a 2 acre yard, cuts really good, traction is really good for a lawn tractor, my yard has a lot of hills and it pulls them good.
Cons: some of the controls feel cheap made, but that could just be me, since i have been use to a bigger more expensive machine
